Exactly why stuff like this doesn't work. In addition the Wayback machine hasn't been archiving anything since 2008 (at least as far I can see).

Hosts can still provide raw data logs to prove who was the original owner.

But hosts can alter those.

Why would a host protect illegal activity on their servers by illegally altering logs to protect themselves and the other party, when they could just easily remove the illegal content? Why take the risk?

How is altering logs illegal, especially if the logs were altered before the court case?

So you're telling me if I copy someone's website and get my host to change the log dates so it appears I had the site beforehand, that's not illegal activity?

It's like in real life, if you have an idea, but someone else copies that idea and claims it as if he/she were the author you have nothing to do (unless you can paper-prove it). It's just like the first one to claim the idea gets the credit. I know it doesn't sound fair, but unfortunately that's how it works.

But it's always good to let the users know that as an administrator you care of the privacy and authoriy of the information.

Haha, well to be honest, it warns people off. People can still rip everything from your site. Adding a badge doesn't really do much to the site really if I'm honest. It's good to have but it's not something that you should do before opening any site etc...
