Chat/shoutboxes can reduce the activity of the forum as well as people decide to talk and spend time chatting in there.
I moved the chat area to inside the forum for the reason that Fowler states.
It is good to have if there is alot of people on but if you want to keep the numbers up I wouldn't recommend one.
I know alot of Gaming sites use them for minor 733t messages left for each other.

I have a cbox on my forum (at the request of a couple of members) and it's only visible to members of the forum (so this gets rid of spam bots... at least, it has so far!).
I've found that the cbox hasn't really affected the level of activity on the forums, as most members seem to prefer to actually post things, rather than chat.

I don't have major issues with the chatbox on the portal page of Andy Inc. It does get negative and questionable posts once in a while, but I try to delete them when I can.
IMO chat boxes are a waste of time and space. I've left forums because of these things and the abusive activity they seem to bring about. I would much rather have my members posting. Plus, there's MSN, Yahoo and other message services for chating. ~biggrin~
