Firstly, I didn't want to dragged into this as I really don't care. But here's my take;

Being bluntly honest, everyone in this thread who has posted a statement about any OS being better in others in any way, shape or form, without mentioning personal preference, should not be allowed access to a computer. There are stereotypes regarding each OS, Windows 7 being good for the average user, Mac being amazing for graphic design and video editing, and Linux being kept to the master geeks who want server grade software on their home computers. Let's face a fact people, YOU'RE ALL MASTER GEEKS. If you haven't ever touched Linux, you better not call yourself a Webmaster. Linux is a general favorite for server administration, that my friends is a fact.

Now, how about you turn this topic around by starting to mention facts (with valid proof) about each operating system to continue a debate. However, bare in mind that this is completely personal preference. Competition keeps each OS on its toes, without the others your favorite OS wouldn't last long anyway.

But he is a very weird guy.

Oh joy another LY I get to humiliate.

Code:
Security: I currently have to run a bloated antivirus just to "feel" safe and there is still no way of being completely sure that Im not infected. Linux does have the ability to get viruses itself, but it has dramatically lower chance.

Open Source: Windows programs are almost completely closed source except the few opensource programs that do support windows. Having the ability of downloading a program knowing that it is completely free and I can almost do anything I want to it gives me extreme joy.

Gaming: I have an xbox360 for gaming, so why would I need the windows back end for gaming? There are also games designed for linux, so if I do get bored; I can always play some of those

Customization: Yes...windows can be customized with programs like rainmeter, windows blinds and themes by other people. Lets face it though, do I really want a program just to change a theme or just to get a fancy effect? Linux comes with almost everything you can desire...simple theme installer, badass interface ( Gnome, xfce, etc ) and you can't forget compiz ;)

Package Manager: Linux has more programs than you can count in one day ( or until you get bored ) and windows has the same. "Why is linux better"..lets see a package manager to find these programs easier while windows programs are one of those things you have to google this, google that.

Transmission: One of my favorite things that windows will never have. If you want to know what it is, google it. ( Supports only Linux and Mac )

1 (security). Uhmm if you use UAC you will be safe along with knowing what not to click. Linux has just as much chance of getting a virus as mac and windows do. If secruity is a concern of yours I highly suggest agaisnt Ubuntu. Reason being it has so many flaws and by defaut sudo has a 15 minute wait. Which opens you to a full on attack. See here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HxFGQ8OpYw and here - https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubunt ... -announce/

2 (OSS). By default yes thye are closed source, but who gives a care? Unless you are a programmer it shouldn't matter. Might I also add any open source program you can find on linux is on windows or has a alt.

3.(Gaming) Cool you have a console this does not prove Linux is better for gaming lol...

4.(Customizing) This all depends on the distro you are using. Some like ubuntu are very limited, for example In the latest release nautilus and pulseaudio are built in. When trying to remove them any debain based and most rpm based distros sad excuse for dependency handling tries to remove everything gnome related. Unlike distros such as opensuse or slackware.

5.(PAckage Managers) Windows has package managers aswell bro. Linux infact was not the first to make one. I believe it was back in 95 a indy dev tried to make one for windows 95 and it failed hard. Ofcourse to be fair the reason was due to Dial Up.

6.(Transmission) first let me say if Transmission alone converts you to linux you are a odd ball. Utorrent is better then transmission in every way possible.

7.(Compiz) Do you realize Compiz is still in beta? Do you realize almost every compiz has is useless? Atleast aero and aqua have useful tools. In Linux I rather just use metacity for my wm it atleast has useful effects.. Besides why in the world would I waste my time playing with a cube over doing my work?

Now please note I am not a Linux Hater(Hence why I targeted certain distros for certain things.). I infact use it on the daily. What I hate is LY spreading bullshit about it. Or saying it is better due to x reason. When it is false.

So if you use Linux use it for the right reason...

He is simple saying Ubuntu is not its own OS. It is just another Linux Distro that has the same base as all the other ones.(Linux kernal,gcc,xorg,etc..)<br /><br />-- 13 Aug 2010, 12:02 --<br /><br />

 @ the "linux doesn't get viruses because it is bad" wow. That made my day.

Apart from all the arguing - Windows 7 is so much better for multiple reasons. It is far more advanced than any linux distribution I have seen.

Apparently you havn't had to install a file via a terminal. Also, determining how advanced a OS is utterly useless as a windows user will say that Windows is more advanced, a mac user is going to say OSX is more advanced and a linux user is going to say linux is more advanced. Its personal preference.
Why would one wanna use the cli these days? The CLi was useful back in the 70's and 80's. Today the GUI is what everyone uses unless you are a bash script maker or a server admin.

1.) UAC can simply be disabled through one small registry edit, so no. Just because you have UAC doesn't make you safe and as for the Sudo. The timing can be changed.

2) I must admit Im not a programmer, but its always good to have something open source if you DO decide to try programming and make your own mix of things. Everything on linux can not be found on windows and of course theres an alternative to programs, but that doesn't change the point of me wanting open source software.

3) I was mostly pointing out, that I don't need windows gaming back end if I wanted to "game".

4) Sounds like someone doesn't know how to use the package manager correctly 😉

5) How many people know about that? I sure don't and Ive been used windows since early 98 🙂

6) It didn't alone convert me to linux and both do have their ups and downs.

7) You find it useless, that doesn't mean that I don't find it useful

I also wasn't debating about this; I was mentioning the reasons Im switching. I wasn't expecting people to go crazy or anything. Also, before you post your next response. Please read your post, spell check it, or go take an entry level english class because all your posts are really hard to read.

Twitch is a highly respected member and that he just outsourced you on arguments doesn't mean you can do a personal attack on the guy, thats just wrong.

We understand that you like Linux better then Windows 7, fine but if you didn't want it to be discussed why make a topic about it?

I have almost 3x rep and posts, been here longer and have actually Contributed to the Community. Sure, hes "respected".

That might be the case, But as a matter of fact, with your attitude the only respect your gonna get is this:

19522451v5_225x225_Front.webp

@Pixel really dude? Who cares you my fellow sir are the definition of a fanboy.

Why? Because we all know you started this topic for two reasons.

A) You want to turn a topic into a flame war etc.. than try and flame someone

B) You like to see people argue.

Now myself, Will explain why ALL THREE OS, are the way to go.

First off is windows7.

Windows 7 for people just getting into computers and or people not as experienced usually tend to use windows 7. It just has so many "user friendly" features which is why it draws so many new "comers" around. However I'm not saying advanced users don't use it but come on really if your an advance Windows user we ALL know you would be rocking Windows XP. Windows is also well known for it's gaming as the other two OS are NOT. Please note the reason being why newer users to computers are using Windows 7 is the media attention they are getting, most of their commercials now-a-days contain ways that every-day users can do more and less confusing which is why I have stated Windows 7 is used by the "EVERY DAY" people.

Mac

The Mac OS'S are simply easier to use for education and or graphic designs. As gaming hasn't really "hit" the OS yet, But do keep in mind that many games being made that you play on WINDOWS is made by Mac users, Simply put MAC is in my opinion and the opinion of many colleges, highschools etc.. MAC is the way to go on this end. Mac isn't known for it's gaming end even though they have finally pushed to allow games from "Steam" etc.. come onto the Mac database, However Mac's OS(s) still wouldn't be my choice for "playing" games.

Linux
Ahh good old Linux! Linux is probably my second favorite OS why? Because like others have stated it's good to learn for any job you may get that has advanced computering skills, However Linux as many know can be complicated which is why Linux is the advanced users house.

Anyone can get used to it but it is mainly used by web hosts and or people wanting to learn programing Linux also has ways to install both MAC + Windows applications and or programs so that pretty much beats both of them on some features.

1. Yes and guess what the hacker needs admin access to put that registry into your computer, but oh wait how are they going to when UAC is on :O. So unless you have disabled UAC or use a admin account your are safe as long as you know what you are doing.

2. Cool that is fine I was just wanting you to know foss software is on both 😉.

3. Then why mention it in the first place 😵? I mean heck if you do not game on a PC there is no need to bring gaming up. Besides Consoles > PC s IMO.

4. Yeah that person would be you 😉. Go ahead and uninstall pulseaudo watch what else it wants to remove 😉.

5. Probably all Windows Power Users Or Experts. I was merely trying to enlighten you that Package Managers are nothing new.

6. Just making sure I mean heck you used it for a reason to switch lol.. When imo and others Transmission sucks, but ofcourse to each his own.

7. Which is great that you do. I do not understand how you find it useful though. I mean really all it is,is special effects. Nothing in compiz really helps me get work done faster.
Infact if you have compiz enabled you will not be able to watch a youtube video in full screen without major lag.

Sorry I am not grade a a grammar. Between my a.d.d and always thinking brain I have trouble.

Oh and again I would like to mention I do not hate Linux. I hate the fanboys that make up most of its community.

Also on the matter of contributing.. I have no donated money, but I have always tried to help the community. If that is helping then please sir tell me what is.

Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot you sit next to me and watch everything I do. Yes, I have. You jump to conclusions like that because you have no match here.

Oh yeah. OFCOURSE. Just because I used windows 7 I am sopposed to be in absolute love with it. Well I have used the Ubuntu OS for a good year. It sucked. Graphics died all the time and were awful (yes, I had an amzing graphics card), Nothing ever worked right. Nothing was compatible. I couldn't get work done as fast on a Ubuntu thing then I do on a Windows PC.

Hell, even my old laptop that doesn't even have enough ram to run windows runs XP better than Ubuntu.
