If you've used referral contests to bring in new members to your board, how effective do you think it is? I'm considering it for mine but I'd like to hear some first hand experience from people who have tried it. Let me hear your thoughts on it.

To be honest I don't find referral contests effective at all. Usually people can't find others to refer and if they do the person signs up and doesn't post at all.
From my experience referral contests don't work.

Referral contests are great but it would be foolishness to kickstart a forum with it. If you want to see some temporary hike in member statistics you can host one but the euphoria is just temporary.
Instead, why dont you try to advertise your forum a bit more? Remember, advertisements arent only about posting in forums belonging to your niche, but others too! You dont know when people would feel interested in your work.
