Obesity is a real problem particularly here in the United States. I think schools are trying to implement programs that educate children why certain foods are simply healthier than others. However, some believe educating is not enough and that temptation of low in essential nutrients types of food should be banned from public schools.

Should junk food be banned from public schools?

I didn't go to public school, so I don't know much about the food quality, but I can imagine that it it's pretty poor. I don't know about banning food with low nutrition, but they probably should improve the quality a bit. Just because someone's still in school, doesn't mean they should eat crappy food all the time. 😛

I been to so meany schools in my life and glad that I finished in 2009. And to answer your question to this topic, YES? they should banned it and sell good healthy food

I think it depends on what you mean by healthy food though. Eating a salad every day is probably a bad idea. Good food in my opinion means decent-quality meat. I imagine the stuff they put in burgers at schools is probably worse than the stuff they put in a Big Mac, but there's nothing fundamentally wrong with the idea of some beef in between two pieces of bread, so long as the meat's good.

I think the issue is food high in sugar, not regular food shipped by that doesn't have real high quality. Honestly, if they want to reduce the amount of sweets that are available, they should reduce how much they order.

What foods do they serve that are high in sugar? As I said, I didn't attend public school for most of my life so don't remember.

With the stress that schools put their students through, though, I can barely blame students from wanting to eat candy bars every now and then. 😛

I don't think so. I know in Georgia, they've introduced these "healthy" schools. These things are money pits. No 5th grader wants a salad. It just isn't in them.

There's one more thing that needs pointing out: I don't put kid's obesity on food anymore. It's on exercise. If you sit around and play computer all day, you'll get fat on salad. I know growing up I ate it all: Twinkies, Ding-Dongs, Coke, the whole nine yards; but I wasn't fat, because I was very active playing sports and such. If kids played outside and ran around, they wouldn't be nearly as fat as they are normally.

I don't know if they should be banned, But schools need to do alot more to edcuate kids. I think food education should be enhanced to teach kids what food has what vitamins etc. What other foods contain protein other than meat, What food can help certain ailments, and most importantly what sugar does to the body, what fat around the stomach does to you heart and other organs. Food ed needs to be more than teaching kids how to bake a cake.

They should be banned. I'm teaching in a private sectarian school, and banning these kinds of food is one way of educating the child to avoid such unhealthy food.

No, it shouldn't be banned, but it shouldn't be in school lunches, either. I guess the best solution is simply to encourage moderation. Otherwise, it gets into a health police situation - sort of like how New York State tried to limit soda pop sizes.

Banning such foods doesn't remove the desire to eat such food out of people and as long as the desire is there, they will still seek out and consume it regardless of the ban. If you feed someone food that they don't like then they won't eat it and will just throw it out. You might as well be making the food they will eat as otherwise you will just be throwing your money away. Besides the kids are eating far more at home then they are in school so as long as their eating habits at home are poor then anything you do in school isn't going to make a difference at all.

We had stuff like pizza when I was in school and I'm not sure if that was junk food or not. Also, in high school, there were soda machines - but I don't remember ever buying anything from them.

My kids hight school did healthy foods the had machines but they had fruit juice and water in them
The children could have a hot meal like pasta or cold meal like a chicken wrap
It was the children idea to do away with junk food at the school

I really don't think it's the food, but rather the lack of exercise. In fact, one nutritionist I met even said that "lack of eating", combined with inactivity - also caused weight gain.

I think they should not ban it but tell them to eat healthy and exercise

Well, they can ban it, if only the will provide them good food to eat, most people that eat Junk,do so because they can't afford an adequate meal.
So before banning anything, you should provide an alternative. And by the way, junk food is not as harmful as people see it.

Should junk food be banned from public schools?

Well, I love junk food so I'll say let the schools keep it around. Theres nothing wrong with being obese. If it makes people happy, let them do it.

Where is democracy if there is a ban on certain foods. I don't think it is right to force people on a particular diet like banning junk food in schools. My question is this - will children who don't eat junk food be guaranteed of a long and healthy life? If your answer is yes then let's ban junk food.

I think we're moving toward a nanny state and some junk food - aside from the "official cafeteria meal" (what you generally get when paying the normal price) isn't going to hurt a kid, given their youth - assuming they practice moderation - but given different genetic dispositions, some can gorge on junk and it does nothing.
