Should junk food be banned from public schools?

Kids today should be taught about bad eating habits, because poor eating habits developed at an early age can lead to a lifetime of real health consequences. Kids spend the majority of their day here(public schools), so this is where we should lay the foundation for healthy eating habits.

Over here we have a pending bill in congress to ban soda in public schools because that is a contributing factor to obesity. Although there is also an awareness about junk food but I don't hear any motion to ban it from school. I guess it is up to the parents to check their kids on their food. I am actually against the ban on anything because I believe in the freedom of expression so there also should be freedom of choice when it comes to food.

I think they should ban Junk food from schools and have healthy options for kids to buy

May be once in a while have some goodies given out as a treat but mainly healthy food

If we start dishing out junk food kids will want it all the time and lead them to not cooking and could lead to problems in life

Short answer Ban Junk Food

May be every so often may like 1-3 have some food like chips and other things normally available for sale

Yes, ban it. Childhood obesity is a problem. But also cut spending for cafeteria foods since a lot of the food is wasted.

I didn't go to public school, so I don't know much about the food quality, but I can imagine that it it's pretty poor. I don't know about banning food with low nutrition, but they probably should improve the quality a bit. Just because someone's still in school, doesn't mean they should eat crappy food all the time. 😛
I go to a public school and I never really have the school dinners. I've had them a few times though. But I must say, that from what I've seen, the quality is poor.

Obesity is a real problem particularly here in the United States. I think schools are trying to implement programs that educate children why certain foods are simply healthier than others. However, some believe educating is not enough and that temptation of low in essential nutrients types of food should be banned from public schools.

Should junk food be banned from public schools?
The thing about Junk Foods like Burgers, Chips(or Fries), Pizza, you know the drill. It's that once a child has a bite of at least one of those items. They'll most likely love it. I'm not a big fan of Burgers but I do love Chips and Pizza .

So back to the question. Since a lot of children are starting to become fat and obese; I do agree that Junk Food needs to be banned. Kinda like how(I'm pretty sure it's only the UK that's done this so far) have banned Junk Food Ads(Correct me if I'm wrong). If children aren't getting the Nutrients, Grains, Carbohydrates etc. they need then it's all going to spiral out of control.

In fact. I feel like the Government should place a fine around £150($193.88/as of now) - £300($387.76/as of now) if the childs weight goes out of control but the paren'ts are given at least 3 months to get them back into shape before the fine hits them. That's what I think anyway.

For many children living in the United States the school lunch is their main meal of the day, so yes, limiting junk would be a benefit for their health and minds.

I don't think so. I know in Georgia, they've introduced these "healthy" schools. These things are money pits. No 5th grader wants a salad. It just isn't in them.

There's one more thing that needs pointing out: I don't put kid's obesity on food anymore. It's on exercise. If you sit around and play computer all day, you'll get fat on salad. I know growing up I ate it all: Twinkies, Ding-Dongs, Coke, the whole nine yards; but I wasn't fat, because I was very active playing sports and such. If kids played outside and ran around, they wouldn't be nearly as fat as they are normally.

I agree with this. Weight is so much more than just diet and what we are consuming. Appropriate diet and exercise habits working in conjunction with one other is a much more beneficial approach to alleviating this issue, in my opinion. 🙂

Junk food is usually cheaper than healthy foods. Raise the price of the junk food and drop the price of the healthy!

Banning anything is not a good idea. A govt or authority should not impose eating habits on people. Spreading awareness is fine. What free world is it if we cannot choose what to eat.

I don't know if this is on a global scale, but here in the UK we have introduced sugar tax so sugary drinks are more expensive. I have no idea if this works though, I feel like if people really want a drink they wouldn't mind paying 6-8p (whatever it may be) more to get their preferred drink.

I see your point though, like the cost of some salads for example is extortoniate in comparison to how cheap and accessible a fast food resturant is. :/

YES! Salad is much more expensive! When I went with my daughter to the cafeteria at her college we were both going to grab salads but they were twice as much as a sandwich! It's ridiculous. I asked the worker why the high cost and she said lettuce was expensive so they had to pass that off to the customer. So we got sandwiches.

In some cities there is a pop tax (yes, I refer to it as pop, not soda, not fizzy drink LOL) and some people will shop outside the city to avoid paying the tax.

Haha, it is fascinating the different names people use for these things. But yes, I suppose it depends on supplies as it seems the UK has much cheaper groceries for instance. So maybe that also plays a part in the obesity epidemic. I think it's down to how cheap and easy it is to access these junk foods, that makes it difficult to stamp out so one simple solution (such as banning it completely) may be rendered insufficient.

I think many people get confused about this issue. The school lunches we are talking about are paid by United States taxes and are not banning junk food, just making the childs man course a healthy one. The obesity epidemic in America is largely ignored because the corporations selling addictive sugar based foods are in control of Washington.

Eating healthy is more expensive at first when compared to chips, soda and frozen but once you make salads, chicken and fish part of your weekly menu not only will you shed pounds but feel great, have a better life and live longer.

I do agree as junk food is something that you should be shown in your early years. It's harmful and addictive and you will have to burn with forskolin dr oz or something afterwards, just take a look at these small buckets walking around. I still remebmer when there used to be only one fat kid at every kids group but now everyone is a fat kid. It's just ridiculous.

So much of the obesity problem is genetic. Myself, I have the opposite problem of being lanky, lol. Anyway, it seems most of the population is genetically geared toward being overweight (Well, that's not necessarily bad - only extreme cases.) and food isn't helping things!

Yes, in schools I agree you are there to learn and what they feed you is also a type of learning so lets teach them to eat healthy

Banning things has never seemed to help. O.K. Prohibition (in the US) didn't work (for alcohol). The War on Drugs was bad. O.K. banning or reducing sodas (in size) isn't good - even though soda is pure junk.

What should be done is simply educating and encouraging parents to "encourage" kids to make healthy choices.
