Requirements:
---> Internet Explorer
---> Google Toolbar

All you need to do is to get your site included in the Google's custom button's gallery. It can increase traffic to you site and it take couple minutes to do it.

Note: Use Internet Explorer when doing this. Also, you will probably want a custom favicon for your site before you do this, as this will be the icon for your button in Google's gallery, and can be seen by everyone.
Lets get started:
1) Download and install the Google toolbar for Internet Explorer
2) Then go to your forum page and right click on its search bar. Go down and click "Generate Custom Search..." Enter in a title and a description you feel is appropriate and then, click on "Add".
Now, the custom button s added in your toolbar.
3) Now, on your Google toolbar click "Settings > Options" and hit the "Buttons" tab. Highlight the button you just created and click "Edit" then click "Use the advance editor...".

4) A new window willpop-up with some codes. Copy all that code to notepad (or whatever text editor you like). Save the file (ie "mygooglebutton.xml") and ftp it to your site. (Must have the .xml extension)

5) Test the file you ftped, by visiting its location as a web page (ie http://www.mysite.com/mygooglebutton.xml )

6) Go to Google Toolbar Help and complete the form giving them the url to the xml file you created. If you cant find it then follow ths direct link: Submit Google Toolbar Buttons

7. Google will see if your button meets their editorial guidelines, and if it does they will add it to google's button gallery. 😉

Enjoy!

Do you mean open your forum in IE? What do you mean by "its search bar" where is it?

Open your forum in IE, and right click on the search box (your forum's search box), and then go down the list and click "Generate Custom Search..." Enter in a title and a description you feel is appropriate and then, click on "Add".
Now, the custom button s added in your toolbar.

Your site will get backlinks from google and your site will be included in Google's custom buttons Gallary. Take a look at the gallery, you should see my site induced too: http://www.google.com/gadgets/directory ... &start=504

I clicked the search button (No outright search button in the corner like some forums have.) and it didn't show that option you were talking about.

Did you install Google toolbar first?

Install Google toolbar for IE
Open your forum page in IE and right click on your forum's search box.
Select "Generate Custom Search..." from the list
Enter Title and description and click "add"

I have the toolbar, however, I cannot find your "search box".

I don't have a box that you type in that's shown on the regular menu(neither does FP by the way). I have a button and I clicked it left and right and clicked all parts ( I think) of it. Couldn't find that thing that says "Generate Custom Search".

However, I did click on the options button the regular Google Toolbar and it took me to a thing and I think I can see something that says "Custom Buttons" and inside that menu I can see something that says "Button Gallery". Is that what I'm looking for?

ok .. scroll this page all the way up. There is a search box which says"search the topic". Right click on that box and you should see that option.
Another way is to click on "search" button(located to the right of "blog") and right click on the search box.

I might have found some on my inner forums but not on the main page.

However, I'll check those out anyway.

Tried. Didn't work.

By any chance will this work in Firefox as well?

Explorer is not my default browser.

I have tried every search box and still can't find it. However, I can find custom buttons on the Google toolbar.

Can I add them from there?

@iron hide - you realize 90% of everyone online have switched from Internet Explorer to a faster, and better browser.

You need to copy the code for you forum first. I think there is some problem with your toolbar. Try re-installing it and use the IE google toolbar. If it still doesn't work for you then try installing Google toolbar for Firefox and try it.

@Bart, well thats just for a temporary purpose. Even people switched to other browsers but still they can't get rid of IE. It is still built in in windows 😉

You can easily uninstall IE. 😛

Just an update. This tutorial doesn't work with MyBB's search box, but it works well with phpBB.

How would using a Google Searchbox help anymore than the standard one for the forum?

iron hide thanks for the explanation. I've done this for my business forum and have added the button to my Google Toolbar in IE. However, I can't find the button in the Google Gadgets Directory, does it take some time to get added there?

Many people have switched from IE, but according to WikiPedia IE still have 43% of the market, W3Schools say that share is 24%. I don't know what the correct figure is but Internet Explorer is still a widely used browser.

It is still widely used and will probably continue to be used for a very long time. IE is also hard for a casual end-user to uninstall (moreso than regular installations).

I'll give this a shot, thanks for the info!

The custom button has nothing to do with IE, we used IE because it works well when using IE. All you did is submit your button no matter if it was created by using IE or firefox.

@Fergal , It takes a while, Google will review your forum and check to see if it is violating any guidelines or if site has warez or illegal stuff. I would say give it one or two weeks 😉

Thanks iron hide, hopefully it will bring us some traffic, once it gets approved.
