I give my staff my personal number in case of emergencies with the forum, or something of relation. I would advise you do this, only if you trust your staff with your number. I've known everyone on my staff for 'bout a year now, and we're all a small family.

I never give out my phone number. Not on my own or anyone else's forum either. That is a huge no-no because like Loading said, you really don't know who you can trust on the Internet. So I wouldn't even try it. It doesn't matter if you've known them as an online friend for two years, or even ten years. It's not safe.

I won't do it. You shouldn't trust anyone on the internet.

So then you just go around on the internet being a jerk and not trusting anyone?

I don't think that's quite what he means. I think he meant that you should just be careful about what kinds of information you give out on forums like this one, or even small ones like mine, because again, people may be friendly to you on line, but it could be a whole nother story as to how they treat you in person, or even over the phone. So it doesn't mean that he's going to run around to every forum out there and act like a jerk, as you say, it means that he is using his smarts and not giving out private information.

I would only ever give out my spare number, never my personal one.

I would never even give out my spare one, because you just don't know who to trust out there. That's the only problem. I've heard of administrators doing this before, especially if they have loads of staff and are gone for long periods, they'll give out their numbers to be called "only in emergency" and sometimes even that's not a good idea.

The thing about that is, if it is sent over the internet, someone else can find it.

Fixed gent.

I would never post my phone number EVER over the internet. People will most likely get a hold of it. And fact of the matter is, I do trust people on the internet. But I don't trust ANYONE on the internet, if you get my meaning. And you especially don't want to risk the Internet Hate Machine (Anon) getting a hold of personal information like that.

And no matter how long you know someone, they can end up screwing you over big time. Even if it's unintentional. Oliver who I thought as a gent before is an example of this, and as is one of my friend's old friends (Jaosals knows of this)

You can love people on the internet like a family. But you shouldn't trust them (not too much at least).

Why thank you MV. Weblsug?

I would NEVER place a phone number, aim msn or my main email address into a topics post within a forum.

Remember that the posts could end up as a part of a google search.

I think there is only 1 person i would give my phone number to and that would have been efc2009. I have known him for years and we trust each other. I would not trust anyone else enough to give them my number.

Indeed. You're on Olvusulthia then. Fine place, even though I don't visit too often.
I was told by J. Why don't you get on?

I'm usually pretty busy myself. Nonetheless, Olvusulthia, VGC, and my own site all have very close affiliations despite not being "officially affiliated". J is one of my admins. And I did help him out as best I could with the Webslug thing.

Webslug was a pretty good friend to me too, and then he went and back stabbed all of us. Which is one of the reasons you should really set a lot of goals for someone to earn your trust.

I don't give out my mobile phone number to anyone I know on the internet and the likelihood is I never will.

You got it. I won't give my personal information on the internet.

Seeing as I'm the only staff member on my forum from Ireland it's rather impractical. I doubt that I'd like to to spend that much on international calls. The only other Irish staff member that had my number was my friend for many years prior to him being a staff member so I wouldn't count that. He's resigned a month ago anyway.
