Starting a new forum up and need advice

I would go with phpbb, because you may be able to seem to find a better skin for the forum. I also believe has more of a wide variety of plugins/MOD/hack when compared to SMF.

Its really on what features you want on the forum.

I'll say smf is the way to go. I always use it because it is pretty fast and lightweight, plus you really don't need plugins because it has quick reply, so no need to make it less secure. Also you won't have to deal as much with spam bots -😉-

SMF, I was on phpbbs for a week and found it really advanced. My co-admin found it hard to install mods. So we moved to SMF, everything is quick and easy. Ive had no spammers since switching to SMF, that was a huge problem on phpbbs

EDIT: By the way, i had a quick look on wikipedia about the type of board your making, Is that allowed?

Warez is illegal, JasonP must be hosting it offshore then, and I'm sure he isn't hosting it but having it have links. I don't know about the UK laws but in the US you can still get busted even if you don't share the links but your members do.

Since im linking to other sites with the matieral im basically like google , google shares alot of warez links too -D- a nice disclaimer and offshore hosting and i should be fine.

I'd also hide the forum from guests, and during registration put in the TOS that "No Copyright owners or lawyers of copyrights have the right to register here" or something like that. Getting private whois is something you want to do too

P.S. Even if someone did care, all you'd have to do is remove their material and put something like "can't share links to blah blah blah" and you'll be all set. I've seen this with a mobile phone warez site, they've gotten messages from lawyers from some game companies and all they do is have to remove those certain games from the site.

Ofcourse registration is needed and also will tweak the signup processes aswel..

look at this for a theme 🙂

That SMF theme looks awesome! And I see you must of already thought this through, that should be good. Just make sure to get a good offshore host, a lot of the ones that advertise on places like digital point are no good and gone in a short amount of time, try to find one that doesn't allow proxys and other high resource scripts, if they do you know they aren't there to stay -😉-

Wow that theme is cool!

You seem to know what your doing so good luck with the site, just be careful -D-

Go with SMF. I've owned a warez forum before and it ran on SMF. Had no problems at all.

To be honest i find these topics to be pointless. As you can tell from the above posts, it is all down to opinion. 90% of people might prefer one option but it doesn't mean that you will.

It is best for you to try out each software and see what meets your needs and what you like the most. You are the one going to be using it at the end of the day -😉-

Also we do not allow warez sites to be promoted here so you will not be allowed to promote it here or put it in your sig or anything to that effect.

You should say that on every thread like this. 😀

I agree with jason here. I think that's pretty much the main reason why people post these kinds of threads in the first place. They probably already know that they're going to get slammed with other peoples' opinions, which is what they want. They want to know what other people like and prefer, so that maybe they can follow them.

Yeah but alot of picking the forum software is down to the actual person running the forum. You have to set it up, update it, add features, find or make styles for it, set it up and you are the one making the forum so you have to choose if it meets the needs of your forum such as will you need certain features or not?

People may post on their experience but as they are running a different style of forum another forum software may meet their needs. If you have little knowledge of php/mysql then smf would be best in my opinion as it is more basic and easier to add mods to. phpBB3 is better if you have php knowledge and can install mods. phpBB3 is safe and more people are used to phpBB as it is used more as most free forums hosts offer phpBB3 and NOT smf. It should be more down to the person who will be spending all the time running the software and making the forum not the opinion of people who might not have fully thought through their recommendation or gave a recommendation not trying other forums software's.
