The end of ZetaBoards

I’m going to be honest.

I’ve always passionately hated ZetaBoards. I don’t know why.

I just don’t like the platform so this is pretty good news for me. Haha.
truth to be told, I agree with you 🙂 I'm always don't like ZetaBoards

The only thing is we can't delete any posts aghhhhhhhhhh
Yes you can? Should be an option.

We haven't got any mod tools on the board that are working, they all give ab error, been working at it all day, not much good to me of it like that after changing codes around and that. oh well it was a good idea, might be back to the drawing board lol

But with Zeta, more and more people questioning Brandons decision to just dump and run now lol

To be honest, I had doubts about all these "free" services to begin with, especially ones like Zetaboards and Proboards.

They tend to provide a far inferior service to what you could just get by just installing the software yourself, and they usually make it difficult, if not impossible, to switch to anything else.

And neither is it in their interest to provide you an easy way out. I think anything they or Tapatalk push out will inevitably be sub-par and frankly awful. But, we will have to wait and see.

Yeah, but the bandwidth has to be high, otherwise, it isn't worth it. They provide large bandwidth - in exchange for ads.

In a sense, it's probably what the FluxBB Admins are feeling now that development has been cancelled in favour of Flarum which is completely different in every single way.

Kinda sad to see something go like that. But, everything comes to an end.

Exactly, this is a perfect example why one should not use free forum hosts.

It's honestly sad to see Zetaboards this way. Zetaboards was pretty amazing, wish they had offered to buy the databases though. That did suck.

But know that not everyone can afford self-hosting for their forum, and that's why they would rather go with a free host to save them the hassle.

I'm with you there, something about it always deterred me.

I understand that, but then there's a high risk that something like this will happen that will destroy your community. Is that risk really worth taking?

If you're meaning the Tapatalk fiasco happening right now, then I get you. But having said that, it's not as if it would ever happen to Jcink and so far, I find this an ideal alternative to ZetaBoards and no problems with it so far. Everywhere else for free hosting seems a no-go zone for me.

But supposing that there can only be self-hosting for forums a few years down the line then really, that would break me, and would give up foruming altogether. I'm not willing to throw away my money just for frivolous online things especially when I'm on disability, and I need that to live.

And apparently, the recent announcement about the conversions have received bad response from the entire community, from what I've heard. I hope Brandon feels sorry of what he's done. I really do.

Isn't Jcink using an old and unsupported version of IPB to host their forums? That seems awfully insecure to me.

The truth is that all free forum hosts are risky to use. And with Zetaboards it seems the alternative was to completely shut it down, at least this Tapatalk deal could provide something positive to the communities, like access to Tapatalks mobile apps.

Maybe so, but a lot of people of the IF/ZB "snowglobe" hate them with a passion, and that their way of running a business sucks also.

Tapatalk is possibly a terrible idea because of all the themes and etc being lost. They claim we will get to keep css... but really... to what extent? They are talking about making things we have had for free have to be paid for. If people of zetaboards wanted to pay for something they would have been on like ipb etc.

As well as this... I rather zetaboards be shut down and be offered our databases. Icyboards did that for their closing. Most of them have successfully moved to Jcink with their databases. Zetaboards people are having to basically start over or scrape their forum.

And as you would know, not everybody were willing to accept such a horrid fate. Even myself, when I was on the verge of just giving up especially when I felt pressurised by my own members over it. But since then, I went down a different avenue instead of having an existing community returning with a new face.

It's basically why Atrium is restarting. 🙂 giving it more features we were wanting to give but couldn't on zetaboards. Changing flaws and trying to move forward instead of looking back. This is a good time to do major changes.

It also wouldn't be helped that many people made their boards when they were teenagers and possibly even new to the forum scene to know all the pros and cons of the various options. Database exports weren't a thing I thought about for a long time, and by the time it would've crossed my mind, my board would've already been converted from IF over to ZB, so I'd have been stuck anyway.

The lesson here is to ensure whatever you use lets you have database exports. What you use isn't necessarily the problem but whether or not you're doomed to lose or leave your board behind because you couldn't move it to another service.

I think as courtesy, they should have backed up the "destined to be destroyed" forums so people could move them.
