The meaning of a "dead" forum

What does it take to call a forum "dead?"

I had a forum that didn't get many posts on it for roughly 3 months. It was just getting posts in a specific board, but just not as many on the overall forum. During those 3 months of the forum's inactivity, nobody really was motivated to advertise to gain more members, or to start up new threads for discussion. People still logged on daily though. I still logged on daily. Some staff members still logged on daily. New members still joined, but they didn't post.

Then one day, after those 3 months, I decided to host a contest and BOOM. Activity sprung up instantly.

So was that forum dead or just inactive during that time?

I'd say it was dead, since nothing really happened and the community seemed to have grinded to a hault. When no one posts and there is no motivation I believe its a dead forum, and its very hard to bring a forum out of that.

But if it's supposed to be very hard to bring a forum out of that, how come I just "revived" it in less than a day by just hosting a contest?

I find a forum dead when you are getting no guests and only yourself visiting the site.

Absolutely nobody posting, even though there could be 50 members online, if nobody's posting it's pretty lifeless in my eyes.

Dead forum:
When you look at the recent activity and you see 2 users online and get excited, only to find that It's a Google Bot ~lol~

I would say a dead forum is any forum that under goes a "dead spell" with little or no activity for an extended period of time. Keep in mind that dead forums can be brought back, but it usually takes either a contest, a remodel, a name change, ect.

Your forum is not officially 'dead' if it still has some activity. It's judged as inactive.
