If i remember correctly someone was praising the old thread for having so many posts and how phpbb is awesome because it can withstand that much.... good job.
 
I don't think the issue is confined to just phpBB. I think a large forum, a topic with a lot of replies being accessed often and being on a shared host with another site running off the same account isn't the best combination.
 
Hmm, my test board on mybb can handle a thread with 100's thousand of replies and I'm on shared hosting.

How often is that topic being viewed though? I can't speak for MyBB but when doing a bit of research into it, vb forums were seemingly having similar issues where performance issues were coming from large topics.

I don't even know if this was the problem for us. I have implemented alot of changes to increase performance (this being one of them) and we have yet to hear back from HawkHost regarding if it has worked or not. Judging by the site speed and lack of slowness, something seems to have worked.
 
If we weren't on shared hosting, then it probably wouldn't have been an issue. It's definitely not a phpBB problem; take a look at Gaia Online.

I don't know, I'll start spamming it with proxy traffic, I don't want to exceed my bandwidth though.
