Personally I think it comes down to what they are using it for.

For simple school work I would suggest a Windows Surface or Chromebook.

For Programming / Web Development I find anything with Windows works well so Dell, Lenovo, HP, etc.

For Graphics & Music creation and things along that line I suggest Mac's.
