All that and much more over at The Realm of Nature!

Hello and welcome to The Realm of Nature's November 2008 Newsletter!

I hope everyone has had a happy Halloween. To go with this time of the year the latest edition of The Realm, our online magazine, is a Halloween Special taking a tour of the spooky side of nature exploring the myths behind some of the creatures that have became so entwined with horror and searching for the truth. Awaken those culinary skills with some recipes for pumpkins and find out how to grow your own pumkins ready for next year. Step into the world of the wolf as we seek the truth behind this misuderstood predator. Natures vampires abound with the new discovery of a vampire moth, not forgetting the infamous vampire bat and the blod-sucking finches of the Galapagos! Slip into the mysterious world of Africa's most feared snake, the black mamba, and see how this deadly snake compares to other venemous creatures. Perhaps a surprising addition to the collection of Halloween creatures, we investigate owls connection to this time of year and of course we can't forget those eight-legged mini-beasts - the spiders.

You can read this issue here - http://realmofnature.webs.com/therealmissue9.htm

Meanwhile there has been plenty going on at the forum and I'd like to offer a warm welcome to all the new members who have joined us over the past month.

We've had plenty of news and chat and I'd like to start by making a special announcement of my own, I now have a dog! She is called Tai and is a three-year-old labrador collie cross. Beautifully behaved and she has been settling in fantastically! There is more about her, including photos, in Pets Corner.

The last month has seen the release of the latest IUCN Red List of Threatened Species with bad news for many, but a few success stories to give hope that other species that are on the brink can still be saved. Also out this month is the Winners of the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition and I have to say the winners have been stunning! The winning photo is of an elusive snow leopard, definately an impressive photo! All this can be found in Wild World.

In Life on Land there are amazing photos of spiders taking on birds and a snake tackling an unwary cockatoo. Plus promising news that British red squirrels may be developing an immunity to the squirrel pox carried by the introduced grey squirrels raising hopes that a vaccine can be developed. The suppposely loving Bonobos, cousins of Chimpanzees, have been revealed to have a darker side actively hunting other primates and even small deer, something that was previously thought to be a behaviour they didn't engage in.

There has been some sickening news recently with a group of youths brutally attacking a blind flamingo at a zoo in Australia. Plus an amazing discovery of a moth that feasts on human blood! An Amur falcon visited the UK anonymously, the first ever recorded here, but the falcon mis-identified as a red-legged falcon (an occassional UK visitor) and by the time the true identity of the falcon was discovered it had left! All this and more, in Flights of Fancy.

Meanwhile in Beneath the Waves some of the first photos of the critically endangered vaquita, a small relative of dolphins, have been revealed in efforts to increase awareness of this elusive species in desperate need of protection. A bottlenose whale echoed the story of the Themes Whale becoming stuck in a Scottish Loch, sadly the whale failed to make her way back out to sea and died. Alaska's Beluga whales have been given protected status despite the protests of governor Palin who also opposed the listing of polar bears under the endangered species act. There is a photo gallery of a few of the hundreds of new species that have been discovered around the coast of Tasmania. The mass stranding of common dolphins in the UK earlier this year was back in the news with the revelation from the Ministry of Defence that they WERE using sonar on the day that the stranding occured despite denying it at the time. And don't forget to check out the photos in the Dances with Orcas thread - Orcas don't need training to swim in synchrony as these wild orcas show!

If you are living in the UK you can become directly involved in research into the decline of the small tortoiseshell butterfly by raising wild caterpillars and recording how many die as a result of a parasite to help determine whether a new parasite to the UK shores is behind their disappearence. You can find out more about this in Flights of Fancy.

If you're not in the UK, you can always take part in the campaigns going on in Act Now! This month we are urging the Europe to keep global warming below 2 degrees celcius and thanking Sumatran officals for protecting their threatened rainforests.

Do take a peek in Creative Nature also as there are two lovely poems from eridani that are well worth a read!

I hope you all are well and you have time to pop into the forum for a visit to share your wild stories and your views on the news! We are always happy to see you.

Thanks,

Katherine

There is plenty going on at The Realm of Nature! Being a Mythbusters fan I hit youtube and now there are a few videos showing the Mythbusters team tackling some common animal myths!

Bad news for California's whales as the America's highest court rules that the Navy can use sonar which is connected to whale strandings and death.

We've got photos of baby Rhino Snakes born in captivity, sardine run action and of the wildebeest migration where crocs are an ever-preasent threat to the herd.

And don't forget to check out the video of a chimp feeding tiger cubs!

Meanwhile on the forum...

It has been a busy time with a number of new members joining us over the last month and I would like to offer a big WELCOME to them!

Our Christmas Advent Calendar is back for another year so come and check what lurks behind the numbers doors each day and I'm sure the forum will soon start to fill up with more festive chatter!

In Life on Land there has been some sad news for George the Pinta island tortoise, the last of his kind, as the eggs he fathered with a female of a closely related species have failed, but for another rare reptile things are looking up. New Zealand's endangered Tuatara have been breeding on the mainland for the first time in around 200 years! Staying with reptiles, rare rhino snakes have been hatched in captivity and a new species of legless lizard has been named! Also in Lfe on Land, we have videos of a cheetah release into a Zebra Park and a chimp who has adopted some orphaned tiger cubs! The race is on to save the endangered Ethiopian wolf from the spread of rabies and the reintroduction of the Beaver to the UK has begun with the first beaver families arriving in the UK to participate in the first trial reintroduction of the species.

With the winter season in full swing, many of us have been enjoying visits from our feathered friends and you can read about that in Flights of Fancy, plus read about how the Bald eagle wasn't an easy choice to be America's first bird!

Beneath the Waves has been a busy section. Greenpeace have decided not to return to the Southern Ocean this year in pursuit of the Japanese whaling fleet and check out a video of one group of researchers breathalysing a whale! Tracking of great white sharks has revealed a gathering in the Pacific - could this be a key mating site? The legeslation between the US Navy and whales has switched back to the Navy's favour as they are once again given permission to use sonar that could be harmful to cetaceans off the coast of California. But there is good news from the UK...the long-awaited Marine Bill has FINALLY made it into the Queen's Speech! Hopefully this will mean the threatened marine habitats and species around the UK coastline will soon be afforded the same protection as wildlife on land.

And not forgetting the BBC is counting down the best wildlife spectacles in the UK an we have loads of videos of the contenders from puffins and dolphins to starlings and pine martins with more to come!

Plus there has been an amazing fossil discovery on the Isle of Sky of an early turtle, a cave painting in Australia is an indication that there was once another now extinct species of giant bat living on the continent, the recovery of the white sturgeon and African villagers living side by side with Nile Crocodiles. The gharial de-off mystery may also be solved, but can action be taken to prevent another die-off?

All this and much more with fresh news, articles, galleries and chat being posted all the time!

Finally, I would like to end by wishing everyone a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and all the best for the New Year. 2009 is set to be the Year of The Gorilla so do pop in during January because I'm sure we'll have plenty of info about them appearing during that month!

All the best!

The Realm of Nature Newsletter - March 2009

Welcome to the Realm of Nature's March newsletter! And I would like to start by introducing the newest member of my family - a baby mourning gecko called Little Cumbrae! She hatched out on Wednesday night giving me a big surprise after a busy night at work! There is a thread about her and photos in Pets Corner so do come along and check them out - believe me though the photos don't really show just how tiny she is!

I'd also like to offer a warm welcome to all the new members who have joined us. I hope you will enjoy spending time on the forum and contribute with your thoughts and stories!

There has been plenty going on at the forum too! Life on Land has passed the 1000 topic mark and among the most recent topics are foxes living a high-rise lifestyle nesting in a tree and a photo of an elusive Jaguar living in Arizona!

Blue whales are taking over the forum with a stunning photo gallery, and article from National Gecographic on the search for a mysterious white blue whale! Not to mention you can test your knowledge in a blue whale quiz and take up the challenge of tagging and identifying a whale in the Kingdom of the Blue Whale game!

Do you think you have what it takes to stand aside and watch as nature takes it's course like wildlife filmmakers do? Come and share your thoughts http://thenaturalworld.forumup.com/view ... turalworld

The honour of being our latest featured charity has gone to the newly formed Scottish Wildcat association so do take some time to check out their website and the information they have about these secretive wildcats.

Remember, at the end of the month is will be Earth Hour - cities all around the world will be switching off the lights at 8pm and you can join them in the darkness to show a commitment tro preventing climate change! Also in Act Now, sign a petition to add your voice supporting protection for Malaysia's wildlife!

So come and pay us a visit, we are always happy to see you and welcome new members!
