I am pretty familiar with that assumption since it is one thrown around often enough. It makes me sad people that would like to help decide not to apply just because they think we hire based on bonds rather than qualifications. But I really would like you all that feel that way to take a look at the latest hirings that have taken place.
At least regarding the RTM, I can speak for the team regarding the first half of this year, where I can recall from the top of my head two ex-review staff members that were not only first-timers in getting any kind of staff position in FP but were also relatively new to the forum. One of them, just like we are encouraging
@planetinside to apply, was the way we received his application and he made it into the team. So, really. It is about your skills. If you take the application with calm and provide elaborate answers and show us your skills, you have a big shot. So,
@Pebbles by all means, if you think you have what it takes to join the reviewer (or any hiring team for that matter) go for it.
I also would like to emphasize that not making a cut the first time doesn't mean you don't have any chances at all or that the staff won't look your way. Sometimes we get more qualified people than spots open. I can also recall a particular member that was close to making it twice before he actually managed to get hired in. If you do a good application and the staff thinks you are right, they will keep you in mind as long as you remain engaged with the community. If you last application was years ago, it would be great to get your updated application.
🙂
Like the gentleman before me, I would likely apply but I have nowhere near fifty posts, nor have I been a member here for over one month. My grammar is good and my writing style, while conversational and upbeat, can be very toned and professional if need be. My biggest fear I think would be my ability to commit to timelines as I love to write but only when I feel like it. As soon as I get blocked into deadlines, something starts to just wither up and die and then it starts to feel like true labor and not of love. If I happen to write something and make a dollar or two from it, great, but I don't know that I will ever be able to turn my writing into something I could sit down to and do each day as a job. I give credit to anyone who can churn up meaningful words about anything and everything on a daily basis, it must take an incredible amount of determination and imagination combined.
Hi,
@Jayze.
First of all, I think it is great you are interested and while you don't feel you fit the requirements yet, I am sure if you enjoy the community they will be covered in no time.
Just in case there is any confusion, I'd like to clarify that the position is unpaid. This is a volunteering position to help fellow members of FP. The FP$ currency is just a virtual currency in the forum that you gain mainly via posting around. So a lot of the motivation for the position is the desire to help fellow members, give something back to FP.
Regarding the concern about committing to deadlines, I think I can relate to where you are coming from. Burnout comes at different paces for different people and for us communication is key. The workload is not very heavy around this time, with just a few requests at the time for official reviews so you can pace yourself to make quality reviews without feeling you are just churning words from one request to the next. Also, if you do get hired you'd have another team member around, so it is not all the weight just on your shoulders.
So all in all, I would recommend you that if you feel inclined for the position to keep an eye on this thread and once you get at least one of those requirements you are missing, to send your application and give yourself a try being tranquil that once chosen in, if for any reason you feel it is not working for you can always talk things out. If you are responsible and keep in touch with the team (especially your director) things should work out fine.
Lastly, to everybody thinking about it, once again I'd like to point out that usually there's only one position open at the time. Right now given the atypical circumstances there are three spots, so if you ever fancied being part of the Review Team it is one of the best opportunities you got to make the shot. So don't think it too much and send that PM. An app in is a better shot than no app at all.
I wish you good luck to everyone of you that applies.
