We have been trying many different resources to get more traffic to our site. Following our very detailed statistics from our server, we have found the following to be the most useful tricks:
1) TWITTER - It is a goldmine for traffic. Follow like-minded individuals. Search for recently posted terms that reflect your site and follow those people. All you have to do is click. THEN, make posts about your site with your link and some of the hot topics. For example: "Forum Promotion offers free signatures! http://www.forumpromotion.net Michael Jackson Iran elections Plane crash"
2) YAHOO GROUPS - Sign up for mailing list that will allow you to advertise. Do not sign up for ones with a lot of spam or with less than 500 members, but rather sign up for heavily moderated groups that allow you to advertise and have a large user base. You may be able to reach up to 1,000 to 5,000 people per group easily.
3) MYSPACE JOBS - Make posts for moderators/administrators/writers in Myspace Jobs. Lots of people are looking for jobs during the recession; therefore, they skim free ad sites regularly. POST ONLY IN THE 15 LARGEST CITIES IN YOUR COUNTRY; posting in local communities does not reach nearly as many people.
4) CRAIGSLIST - Post ads for your website in multiple categories: such as Community (General), Community (groups), For Sale (books), Services (computer), and write/ed/tr8 POST ONLY IN THE 15 LARGEST CITIES IN YOUR COUNTRY; posting in local communities does not reach nearly as many people.
5) TELEVISION CHANNEL FORUMS - Sign up and advertise covertly on TV Network forums. Since I have a paranormal/supernatural forum, I post a lot on Syfy, USA Network, and the History Channel's forums with a signature ad for my forum. If you have a family forum, check out Lifetime or CW. Find television series who are relevant to your sites content and post!
6) SOCIAL NETWORKING - Add like-minded individuals and groups as friends to your "profile" on different social networking websites, such as: facebook.com, http://www.bebo.com, friendster.com, http://www.researchgate.net, http://www.jaiku.com, http://www.gaiaonline.com, and home.spaces.live.com
7) YOUR OWN MAILING LIST - Start your own mailing list on multiple clients, such as Yahoo Groups, Google Groups, MSN Groups, etc. This will keep you connected to individuals who may come to your site. Also, if they sign up for your forum, automatically sign them up for one of your mailing list. This keeps people posted on what is going on at your website.
8) MULTIPLE PORTALS - Have different access points to your websites with different styles. For example, even if you have your own domain and your own server space, make a clone of your frontpage on a free site, such as geocities or angelfire. Multiple access points means more bots, which means more hits!
9) LINK EXCHANGE - Exchange links with like-minded websites. Make sure these are not competitive sites but rather complimentary sites. For example, if you have a forum, hook up with a like-minded with that only does podcasts.
