DO NOT ADVERTISE YOUR HOST SITE HERE

Ok, first let me just tell me a bit about my forum. RPG-Directory has been running nearly 5 year now. Currently we have 20,000+ members and nearly 470,000 posts. Our community is very active, I can't exactly tell how many members come online per day on averadge. I could figure that out tho if that's needed 😀. RPG-D has been running on Invisionfree since the beginning. But really for the past two years I really wanted to move off the free forum software and get the D self hosted.

Now here comes my problem. I'm a total noob when it comes to figuring out what hosting I would need, and what that would cost me. The forum software I'd be transferring the D over to would be IPB. Because Invisionfree is based on IPB 1.3, and it would make the easiest transfer for our members.

So my question is, what kind of hosting would I need for RPG-Directory? And what would this cost me on a montly and/or yearly basis? The forum is still growing with new members and rising activity. So the hosting should be able to keep the forum in the air for the coming years XD. We already have a domain name. And I can probably figure out what the IPB license costs and renewal (or whatever) but if someone can just write me up a little cost sheet that'd be great! Or maybe explain a few things about the hosting, that'd be awesome.

I could easily host your site 🙂.

With a site that big, you would possibly be great on our elite hosting package. If you dont need that much, consider ones under it 🙂 Then, if you still need more resources, I could easily add more to your account within a few seconds.

I'm sorry to come across a bit blunt... but I wasn't asking for people to start advertising their host service. I'd like to get answers on my questions, because otherwise I'd ask if anyone had a place where I could host my forum.

Wasn't having the intent to advertise. I must have read your post wrong.

I haven't used InvisionFree for over 3 or 4..maybe 5 years now. I don't think they provide cPanel. So therefore you're unable to check the specifications you have used in a months time. Do you have any tools available to check the bandwidth you have used in a period of one month?

Well no the only thing we have is the ACP. I could send in a support ticket asking if they can provide me with that information. Tools like that we don't have/use on the D.

Yes, submit a ticket and let me know and I could tell you exactly what kind of package you would need. 🙂 Send me a PM when you get that information.

I'll be posting it up here when I have an answer ^^.

Edit: another question, is it fair for a free forum host to be asking... around 350/400 dollar to buy up our forums database?

Hawk Host has been round for 6 year and is very cheap. You would most likely need to get the Standard Shared Hosting plan which is the same plan Forum Promotion uses. That will cost you about $60 a year and if your forum need more space or bandwidth you can easily upgrade.

They are many free scripts that can convert Invisionfree into actually forum software.
EX: http://www.simplemachines.org/community ... c=188741.0
Invisionfree --> SMF --> What every Forum Software you want to use.

>.> I thought I said I didn't want people advertising their hosting sites in this topic. It's something I'm not even LOOKING at yet.

Anyways. As my forum is really dear to me, I'm not so sure about a free script. How reliable is that in converting all threads, posts and member accounts?

I don't own Hawk Host and they only mention about is so you can see what plan do you need and how much is going to cost you.

I have never use a convert but lot of people had success with them. Most of the script that convert free forum host does not required you to delete or remove post, members, ect.. so if it doesn't work out your forum won't be damaged.

A Shared Hosting account would work, but if you find your site to get real slow with all the traffic then I would suggest a MANAGED VPS.

Yeh that's all fine and dandy, but you can choose from ten million hosting plans. What I need to know is what kind of hosting plan I would likely need for a forum of RPG-D's size that will only grow. I want to be sure that the forum will run fast enough even on very active days where 100's of users might be on at the same time.

@TheHostBox: you mean virtual private servers? others have adviced this to me as well. What's the advantage of this above shared hosting?

I think you should get into contact with Acorn. He moved his forum to paid hosting and had slightly more bigger stats at the time, but moved successfully.

I think about 40GB of bandwidth would suffice as FP used about 25-30GB when it was around that post mark from observation.

No, free forum hosts shouldnt ask to buy your database...Be careful..if you tell them no. They may just make a copy of it instead. :shake:

Urhm... it's the other way around, sorry I must've worded it wrongly XD. We have to pay that amount to buy our database 'from' Invisionfree. So to bring the cost of that down, we'll be deleting as many old posts/threads and unused accounts as we possibly can. But yeh they basically ask 1$ per 1,000 posts.

WOW! That's retarded how they make you pay for your own database!
