I see people sell their forums and/or domain names from time to time and I was wondering how does that process work? How does one transfer ownership of the domain name and the forum itself to another individual? I know that FP has a specific section where people sell their domain names and websites all the time but are there other places where one can do this as well? ...or is it best to just reach out to members of FP?

If the domain is at the same registrar you can push it to the user, if not a transfer must take place where the domain is unlocked and the tag changed.

As for the forum, all files would be downloaded as a ZIP and provided to the new owner who would upload those files (unzipped) to their hosting account.

Firstly you find a buyer by either creating a thread in the marketplace or use sites like Flippa which is a website marketplace. Once you have found a buyer than you negotiate a price. After you make the payment, then the owner will transfer the domain from their account to your account and provide the forum details ie, cPanel login. It is probably best to create your own thread and people who are interested will contact you.

If I am going to be honest, the domains aren't usually hard, as long as they have an account on the registar. I know namecheap is free to sign up so just push it to the account.

For the hosting account, usually your host can do ownership transfers (which are easier than downloading a giant zip file) and boom. Personally I'd prefer to find someone who can keep the ownership of the account, or rather just have it transferred and they can deal with moving if they want; because I'm not downloading a giant zipfile just to move the site. 😛

Well some step's are to make sure your forum is worth anything and if it is, how much.

You need to find a buyer... this is where you spend most of your time. The best place would be on here, but you can use anything from flippa.com to webuywebsites.org. Almost anyone will buy your forum if you setup a right price, provide information on the traffic, the host, etc.

So just make sure: It's a good forum, and a great price.
