What does it take to call a forum successful?

Just wondering at what point would you call a forum successful. Whether it's the number of posts, members, etc. I think based on forums I have seen, a successful forum starts anywhere from 2000-5000 posts.

I partly agree with this. 1,000 members is good, but what's more important is that they are active. And 20,000 posts isn't that much for a forum with 1,000 members, it's only 20 posts per member. I go to a forum with only 160 members that is only a handful of posts short of 20,000. And many members are the kind that register and never come back.

I think it's about active members. My forum barley has any members, but we have over 20,000 posts.

I'd say..a site where you are CONSISTENTLY getting at least 1 member a day, having active forums/shoutbox, at least 100 active members, looking good.

i think you just need alot members to be active and contribute. Even if you have 1000 members and only 150 of them really participate then thats not really a success in my mind

A successful forum is a forum that is persistently achieving beyond it's goals or expectations. Just because a forum is active does not make it successful, unless the forum has goals, and when it has reached it's goals, then it can be called a successful forum.

When the forums active members are close to it's total members

A site can have 10000 members, if only 700 are active, that isn't successful.

A site with 600 members with 500 active, in my books is more successful

One that never stops growing. Once it hits 100 members, it doesnt freeze there. For every 50 members it should be getting 100 posts per day at very least.

A successful forum needs stability. I hate it when I go to some forums and they have about 4 admins or a new admin every month and a new set of staff every month. If a forum has no stability then what is the point in being there?

I have seen people call some forums with 10,000 posts and been around for a couple of months successful. I don't see that successful because it is still an unproven forum in my opinion and could still just shut down like a lot of forums do these days when the members stop coming or the posts aren't rising as quick as they want it to. It takes time to be successful and some new forum owners open forums wanting it to be an instant success but the chances of that happening to everyone are very very slim. It has taken over 1 year to get this place to where it is now and we have never given up or shut it down when things have been bad.

And obviously if the forum is successful then it would already have lots of members and posts.

Sad thing though is you never know how long that will last. It's almost like being on a boat with a leak in it. You can never really advertise and promote your forum enough. I feel if I left for a few months, my forum would become inactive. I don't know why I feel that way, I think it's because I'm the backbone of my community.

I agree with what most people are saying. I think around 10 quality active members can make a sucessful forum.

It depends what you see as sucessful. Some people who have big forums will have high expectations for their projects.

I think it is how the members feel when they are there.. I have had members tell me how much they've enjoyed my forum, or how addicting it was, and to be honest, that means more to me than having an astronomical amount of members and posts.

This is why I don't really care about post counts.. of course, I want an active forum, but I think that having a place where your members feel comfortable posting and being themselves is what it means to be successful. ~cool~

To me a successful forum would have about 50 active users and at least 20,000 posts, though at the moment we have about a handful of active users and 19,000 or so posts. I hope I can get more active and loyal users.
