Either Norton or AVG. I personally prefer Avast because of the bootscan feature.

Umm... no, not norton. 😉

It's a hell of a resource hog, slow, not the best virus database, slow.
I don't even class that program as a anti-virus.

Also Norton in the last 2 years has become alot faster. It no longer slows down your system as much. It is alot lighter then Mcafee is/was.

*Shudders at thought of Norton*

I had Norton on the old laptop i used (my parents) and it was slow (i think 2004). I now have my own laptop and use my parent license (they have a 3 computer license) and it barely affects start up time and i don't even notice it is installed. When i brought my laptop, it came with Mcafee and it was dreadfully slow and used to cause my laptop to stop responding all the time when i did something.

If i didn't get Norton free i wouldn't probably use it but seriously, it is not as slow as you lot make it out to be now. I am guessing you haven't tried Norton 2010? On the old laptop, AVG free wasn't much faster then Norton 2004 and I had a few problems with AVG which is why i would probably never use them again.

Once a crappy program, always a crappy program. And as you stated AVG free was faster than Norton, which you pay for and was still faster than it.

Also Narton has the least amount of viruses listed in its databanks...

I personally use Kaspersky or AVAST! which I didn't think of much but it one hell of a crazy nutjob for when it finds a virus.

AVG was faster then Norton 2004. Norton 2010 is alot faster then then Norton 2004 ever was.

It might actually be worth noting that i don't actually really do anything dangerous on the internet then visit the same ring of websites. Over many and many years as a family we had 1 virus blocked which Norton stopped and that was many years ago.

Also i don't pay for it, my parents do. My parents don't know anything really about the Internet and go with what they want rather then listening to me as i told them to get something else (as i thought it was going to be really slow like last time) but they don't listen to me but it wasn't actually.

As i said, you probably haven't tried it so how can you comment on something when you haven't tried it and is basing your opinion on an old version.

Iam goin to go out on a limb here and say avira. It has the best antivirus protection out there even better then most name brand ones.

Well my opinion is based on the fact that all my friends have it as it comes with their laptop ect ect and it's crap as hell... yes also everyone does give me their laptops to secure the b*ll's out of it.

Also I'd like to point out all AV's combined will only find about a good 60% of viruses out there for that exact distro/OS.

No iam. I know a fair deal about computers. But look at the link below. Granted avira does give you alot of false positives it also has the highest dectection rates detecting 74% of the threats tested 🙂

Really, then you'd also it's easy to fake data and there are many types of examples like this with each of them giving a huge bigger outcome.

If Avira is the best anti-virus how come 85% of hackers use AVAST!, because it's a crazy mother f*cker when it detects a virus and also has one of the best detection rates (number 2 after Kaspersky)

😉
