Certain rules on a forum are always something that is often in place due to how the owner of the forum would like to see the forum take shape. For example, in some forums you will see that religious talk is fine and not an issue but then another forum, could be against any kind of religious talk to an extent. That is a personal preference depending on the owner.

As an owner of a forum, what is your stance on religious talk? Do you allow it?

I'm for it unless it's a business site where services are sold for money. Then it should be limited as well as a lot of other types of topics such as politics, social justice, etc....

Simple rules and let members feel free, I mean rules are rules but at the end of the day, you do not want to scare people away.

Personally, I'm not always comfortable with getting into religious discussion because most of the time, it's usually volatile and causes a lot of problem.

I try as much as possible to avoid getting into them and the same thing is also applicable to political discussions as well.

Religious talks are always sensitive, so it is best that such topics are not allowed. Unless you have a section for it and you are sure that you can keep it in check.
In general though you would not want to witness the whole religious exchange scene, they are mostly not pleasant.

My main forum is a religious forum, lol.

I haven't given much thought to what if a religious argument started on my 2nd forum. I would probably have to enforce rules about being nice, kind, settling differences through PM, etc, and lock the topic if it got out of hand.

It's a subject that never comes up on any of my forums but if it did I wouldn't have an issue with it.

Neither politics nor religion is allowed on my forum. It's usually a topic requiring heavy moderation and we don't have the manpower for it. I close the thread and refer them to another place that allows it. Simple.

It is always delicate and not something that is going to be easy to handle when issues begin to get worse. So, it is better to restrict religious discussions on forums as one of the ways to avoid controversies on your site. I have seen where it made it ugly on a forum.

I'm thinking about opening my forum to religious and political discussion, but it can be bad for business, so I really can't be involved except in a "cop" sort of way.

It is a lot of back and forth jargon. On a religious debate forum that I visit, I've seen those debates go on for as long as 4 months with several members.

That's good for for SEO but not financially exploiting religion, though.

I dislike it immensely. Too divisive. Unless you have a board where everyone is of the same denomination you're going to get serious problems. Religion is akin to politics; polarising and bad for community cohesion.
