If you've done a recent move, what tips would you recommend to someone to do and not do? What was your biggest regret? What did you pat yourself on the back for doing right?

You can get free boxes from the Aldi grocery store and dollar generals instead of having to buy them! When we moved I just went up there and asked for the boxes and they gave them to me. 🤣

It's been 12 years since I moved and wow, I hated it. We first moved from what state to another, and my husband's company paid for everything...except that I moved our valuable and precious items myself. My dad drove me and towed my car behind his truck and the dog was in the back seat panting for 12 hours because she was scared.

We got to the apartment, and it was a 3 bedroom 2 bath and we got a storage unit too and we had NO room to move around in.

Then we moved into our home 2 months later and I did most of it on my own! My husband and I rented a moving truck and moved the heavy stuff...except for 20 items that I hired 2 Guys and a Truck I think it was called, to move those. Best money spent.

My tips:
  • Having the same size boxes helps if you're putting stuff into a moving truck because they stack easier.
  • PURGE before you move. My husband didn't want to get rid of everything, and he was already in the other state when the moving company came to pack our things. It was awful because a lot of things we could have donated like suits my husband hadn't worn in 10 years and couldn't fit into anymore.
  • Get a mattress plastic bag to protect your mattresses and bed springs! I'm so glad we had one since we dropped the mattress into a puddle. Saved the day with the plastic.
  • There are some straps you can use for heavier items and they really help to shift the weight so it's not as awkward.
  • Keep a broom and dustpan set aside to clean up so the new buyers don't see a mess.

  • Start packing early so you’re not rushing at the last minute
  • Declutter first, no point moving stuff you don’t want
  • Label every box clearly with room + contents
  • Keep important documents and valuables separate
  • Pack an “essentials” box for the first night
  • Take photos of cable setups before unplugging things
  • Use clothes and towels to protect fragile items
  • Notify banks, GP, utilities, and subscriptions in advance
  • Clean as you go, while rooms become empty
  • Check drawers, loft, and cupboards before leaving
  • Measure doorways and furniture to avoid moving day surprises
  • Keep screws and small parts in labelled bags
  • Charge phones and power banks before moving day
  • Arrange parking or access for the moving van early
  • Do a final walk-through of the property before handing keys back

I mean, the list can go on and on 😛
