Where Does the word 'favicon' Come From?
It's such a small image in the url bar, why does it have such a fancy name? haha 🙂 Why not just call it URL image or URL icon 🙂
what does it actually mean and why is it called favicon?
Favicon, as I understand it, is a portmanteau (or combining of two words) of the words "favorite" and "icon." So, instead of calling it a favorite icon, we just call it a favicon. Probably a convenience, so that the file name could just be favicon.ico instead of favoriteicon.ico.
Yup! I believe bookmarks are/were called favorites in some browsers, so it makes a little more sense in that context. 🙂
🙂 I used to save all my bookmarks as favicons in my firefox browser. So I'd be seeing the icons of all my favorite sites on the top all the time.
Far as I know favicons is short for Favorite Icon which is displayed on your bookmarks if it works in your browser in the first place.
