What the heck? Who would have thought that the Hippie culture that started the first technoskeptic movement of the 20th century would have been responsible for the foundations of high tech consumer culture that will make us all technoslaves. The children of these hippies are now "chippies", injecting themselves with a variety of ID tech just so they can check out at the supermarket 30 seconds faster. So the progeny of the Hippies are now just Chippies only one injected neural net implant away from complete technobondage.
I don’t think people injecting themselves with chips is very common at all... there is a bleeding edge of people who are into that yes, but most of us aren’t into that kind of weirdness yet.
I don't buy that many people are really doing that type of stuff. Think: There are 7.6 billion people alive on the Earth today. If a million people decided to implant themselves with a chip, that would only be a hair over 0.01% of the world's population. Statistically, not that many people are doing this at all.
Its all around us but most don't know - ZDNET - "Proteus" - The Chip Inside You That Will Not Die. Precious pills with embedded biochips that tell a wearable sensor that you have taken your pill. The question is will it be the red or blue pill? This company has hundreds of millions in funding. Just for a chip not under skin but inside your stomach.
In the future nobody will be able to get expensive pills unless they wear the yoke of Proteus.
It will start with noblest intent then become mandatory for all sorts of reasons. China might lead the way like it does with everything Orwellian.
Interesting thread. No doubt, we are on the verge of techno-tyranny! Nonetheless. life without the internet would be so boring - it's beyond imagination. In fact, as hippies did acid in the 60s - people now "surf the net". And I must say, I bet the net is a billion times more satisfying!
