Okay, I know I'm promoting my site everywhere, so that's part of the solution, but just now I go on my forum and this is what I'm seeing:

In total there are 41 users online :: 4 registered, 0 hidden and 37 guests

Where are these numbers coming from? I know I can't be promoting at that many places. Probably a handful of promotion forums, one general chat forum, and Facebook. Unless some of these are coming from Facebook? Last time I had that big of a number was when I used Easy Hits 4 U, but that was months ago, if not a year ago... Wow...

It could be a fluke, bots, or a user having trouble with an ISP (an AOL user once caused my forum to have 17 guests online).

That must be some trouble someone's having if it's a case of the ISP. I don't know about it being a fluke, though, as now when I went to look, there were 11 guests online, and as for bots, wouldn't it show up as to what bots were on there? Because I know it'll say something like MSN [bot] AOL [bot} or whatever have you. I just thought that was too darn weird (and cool) at the same time.

Does your hosting account have any stats program such as Awstats that would give you further info on where your referrals are coming from?

If not, you could consider using Google Analytics.

I believe their just the social networking bots in this case from facebook.

They are most likely bots and spiders. They won't show up as "MSN [Bot]" unless you specify them. They can be a range of bots from different sites, eg. social networks, social bookmarking sites and/or just spam bots.

We were discussing a similar issue, well, not sure if it's related or not, but on phpBB communities we were discussing brute force logins, and after Snobo mentioned on here about the AOL issue causing him to have 17 guests clear out of the blue, I'm wondering if that isn't what that means as in if it could be one of my own users having ISP problems. I don't know how to go about with checking that out, otherwise I'd go take a peak and find out what's going on. It seems to have slowed down now, though... I just found that way too weird that I was getting stats like that but I wasn't promoting at too many places...

If that's the issue, then you could probably easily check it by viewing the IP's of all the users online. If there's 37 different IP's then it's most likely a bunch of random bots.
