Which Is Worse; Drinking Alcohol Or Smoking?

hmmm I don't know where I stand. but just for the sake of argument i'm going to argue both points lol smoking affects a family as well. second hand smoke is one of the leading causes of asthma in children. it also leads to developmental problems. alcohol also affects families on a different level. IN EXCESS it can lead to violence and poor decision making. now alcohol in moderation is nowhere near as bad as smoking. in fact, a glass of alcohol a day has been proven to prevent heart disease. smoking on the other hand is bad no matter how much you do it. one cig is estimated to take 11 minutes off your life. marijuana also has its drawbacks. it causes more cancer than cigs even (yes marijuana does kill, just we don't look at cancer). it also has worse addiction levels and people trying to quite who become addicted have issues. i recently went into the drug ward at a hospital and those who were trying to quit mary jane were much more aggressive than those quitting other drugs. i asked if this was normal and the response was yes.

so in conclusion mary jane and cigs both lead to problems and there is no moderation, however alcohol is worse, but it can be used in moderation and is healthy when done so. so in my argument i answered the question for myself lol

Yeah ryanplex, you know how many people die from Smoking pot? 0. 1000 people die from aspirin a year in the US yet that is legal -roll-
I'm pro legalizing marijuana, or regulate alcohol more which is worse. The people that benefit from pot being illegal is alcohol companies, cigarette companies, and drug dealers
That is true. But just b/c there is more recorded deaths from one thing then the other dosnt always mean its more deadly. Plus i belive the only reason why there is 0 deaths from pot is b/c no one has actually done a study on it but iam not too sure.

To measure deadlyness you have to take in the 2 factors that i keep saying, the addictvness and the harmfullness of said thing. Just looking at staticts of deats or something is not going to tell you what is worse for you.

Smoking is worse in the long term, causing cancer and other such health problems. However alcohol can cause serious psychological problems very early on if it is abused. Also it causes serious social problems, can effect the drinkers working life, and drunkenness in the family can cause arguments that break up families. I worked for a time with a charity in Dublin called the ''Hanley Centre'' that helped the homeless. Many children were out on the streets of the city due to parents who were abusive when drunk. Also Alcohol effects driving, and even in a small country like Ireland, there are four or five accidents every weekend due to this.

Neither are good, however it is a lot easier to drink safely than to smoke safely. As long as you limit drink to around two units, and do so in a safe place, you should be ok. Smoking however for me is a complete no no, and seeing as I already have asthma, I will never touch a cigarette.

I'd have to say alcohol. But it all depends on how much your talking about. If it's only based on one drink, then smoking is worse. But if it's abuse of alcohol, then it's worse.

However, I still think drinking is worse. You can get seriously "out-of-it" and into a different, high, frame of mind. While drunk, or under the influence, you can kill others as well as your self. Smoking effects you and others, yes, but you can't get "high" from smoking a cigarette. You don't hear about people who crashed their cars while under the influence of nicotine. Do you?

Correct me if I'm wrong.

well yes I bet some have died from it, but I gotta say you'd have to have a helluva a lot of money to be able to get that much anyway, so thats another reason its less dangerous. Cigs do seem a lot more addictive than pot which makes the risk bigger, but the addiction to the high feeling still exists, guess you can also say thats a bit more dangerous than alcohol because there isn't any "hang over" really afterwards.

I drink occasionally but I don't smoke, I've tried it but I hate the taste and the smell,
Personally I think as long as you drink responsibly, smoking is worst.

I don't drink or smoke. I have an Aunt, she has smoked for years, now... she has emphysema, low energy, and probably a bunch of other things.

I had a great uncle (or something like that, smoked, and drank... his stomach had to be moved (yes... moved), lungs were bad, etc. etc. He died not long ago.

Drinking will rarely kill you by itself, because of it's "brainwashing" abilities it causes other accidents.

Ultimately, you will die of smoking, while you may die of drinking. And smoking kills everyone around you, while drinking may lead to the deaths of other people.

I would say smoking, only because it will damage you and other people.

I'll have to say Smoking. It will do more damage to you.

Drinking is pretty bad too. It can cause you to have a lot of accidents, if you drive that is.

Smoking is a long-term thing, but you have a better chance of killing yourself and other people, if you keep at it.

Drinking has a less chance of killing yourself and other people, and there are a lot of variables, you have to be in a vehicle, or something that could kill someone, Alcohol itself will rarely kill you, and it won't kill other people, but it's ablity to inhibit your control over your body still makes it dangerous.

I believe both should be avoided.

I would say both equally. Too much to drink can kill. Smoking your whole life=cancer(most the time).

I smoke but don't plan to the rest of my life. It takes 9-10 years after you quit smoking for your body to be 99% clean from all the tar and chemicals in your lungs/blood stream.

If you smoke a pack or 2 a day......not good. I smoke around 3-4 packs a week. I will quit when i settle down with a girl and have a family for sure though. 😉

I'll have to say that they're both the same because they can both affect you and those around you. Smoking is a long-term effect, but alcohol is a short-term effect. Either way, you could die from those habits if you are smoking/heavily drinking consistently.

Do you smoke? No.
Do you drink alcohol? No.
Which is worse; drinking alcohol or smoking? I think is more alcohol than smoking, because when you are stoned, you don't know what you do.

Cirrhosis or COPD? Such a hard choice.

Sarcasm aside, I think both are equally bad for the reasons stated above in previous posts. With drinking there are psychological affects on an entire family if abused. With smoking if you're doing it in front of your children you're compromising your health based on a decision you made for yourself, which isn't fair either.

However, drinking one drink for instance won't destroy your liver. Smoking one cigarette won't have you strapped to oxygen. Granted there's not a safe cigarette, but as for alcohol there's a difference in an occasional social drink with friends and being a useless noncontributing member of society.

Drinking, because it could kill you faster since if you drink and drive and crash. That could kill you, but smoking youll just die smoking 😛
