I cannot stand Windows 8. I will NEVER use it on any of my computers. If Microsoft wants to keep my business after W7 gets old and I want/need to upgrade then they will have to go back to their roots and release a desktop friendly OS.
Free and cheap startmenu Programs like Classic Shell Pokki, and, Start8 add a startmenu to Windows 8, and let you set Windows 8 to login to the desktop.
In the newest version of Windows 8 called 8.1, there is boot to desktop, and the startbutton which helps with using Windows 8 on a regular desktop.
Windows 8.1 is more usable on regular desktop in my experience after I pin my most used programs to the taskbar, and add shortcuts to the desktop, and startscreen desktop.
I just recently started using Windows 8. I'm not a huge fan of it but I don't mind it. It do like having all the apps on one panel though. It just takes some getting used to like most new things.
I'm using Windows 8.1 on my new laptop and really love it. There's no difference for me when accessing the desktop as previous versions of Windows. However, the apps are taking awhile to get used to.
At first I resisted as I did not want to create a Microsoft account but now that it's out of the way I'm enjoying Spotify and Next Issue apps.
Personally, I really dislike 8. It's the reason my laptop broke the first few weeks of having it: an update failed, messing the whole Windows 8 partition into a infinite "could not boot" message that would not go away even if I tried to repair it.
I ended up just loading a new copy from MSDN, as ASUS wanted to send my laptop all the way out to California, despite having a repair warehouse in MY STATE.
I don't use Windows 8, and I don't like it either. I like Windows 7 and will be sticking with it until I am forced to upgrade, but hopefully Windows 10 will be good. Also, I probably would use Windows 8 over Mac's OS, mainly because I can't stand Mac's Operating System. It's way to limited in my opinion, and since I'm a game developer my programs I use won't be compatible.
I use Windows 8 on my work's laptop... and I can't stand the interfacing at all. My personal, custom built PC has Window 7, which I definitely prefer. I run into too many issues with 8 and it is really not user friendly. At least, not on a laptop. Maybe on a tablet I can see it being useful, but it does not feel like a computer interface to me.
