Many people would say promoting at Forum Promotion then promoting on a site in which the memberbase consists of mostly Forum Promotion members is pointless. However I don't see it that way. On Forum Promotion as it's busy your advertisement can sometimes get lost. These other smaller forums maximize your exposure even if it's to the same people and not as many. Another thing is if you have a forum with a promotion section then there is a high chance that the owner of the forum your promoting on will sign up to advertise their site and my view is if you pay nothing for an advertisement and don't spend too long doing it then surely even gaining one member is worth it. Even the backlink is worth it in my opinion. So what is your opinion on this matter?

I'm in agreement with you here. Mainly your point is valid and from personal experience your theory works. Just saying.

I'm not against it so to speak. However...

I think some people forget that they need to advertise among more than one community of people for a successful site. Sure advertise on Forum Promotion and places where Forum Promotion members go, but also advertise on other forums with different userbases too, since it gives your forum a more distinct 'flavour'.

Also, it gets repetitive seeing a whole bunch of sites with the exact same people. It's why I barely ever join admin and promotion forums any more, they tend to consist of the same crowd of maybe 50-100 regulars that post on every board over and over.

I have stated before that advertising on same-crowd sites is kind of pointless. I've stated that because smaller sites that are composed of the same crowd of people (likely from FP) don't actually expand your audience. You only get the same people, who in many cases, are not interested in your site anyway.

Sure you might spend more time visible on the index on a smaller site, but what's the point if the only people viewing don't care? You're only advertising to the same (although smaller) group that already doesn't really care. (I mean unless you have a promotion site, the chances of anyone joining from a smaller site are pretty slim.) So you are no more likely to have any of them join than if you just stayed on a larger site and promoted to a bigger audience. And since the larger sites (like FP) have more people with more varied interests an individual site owner (of a different type) is likely going to have better luck getting people to join from those sites than smaller ones.

I get that joining and promoting on a smaller site counts as a backlink to your site for Google/search engines. But that's only one small reason which ultimately may have no significant effect. (Especially if that promotion site dies/gets shut down or etc...) Plus one backlink rarely ever makes a significant difference. The only time it makes any amount difference is if it's a really high ranking one.

And to be rather blunt, a lot of spin off promotion sites just don't last (partially because they are just the same people over and over again, nothing new or original is happening). So after a few months they close down. So often times it's better not to waste time with the smaller versions, stick to the larger site and also make use of other promotion methods in conjunction.

Advertising on sites that have the same crowd can't hurt, but can't necessarily help much. If its the same people, then your not getting anyone new as if it were a different userbase. So its more of a waste of time, and feels like spamming more than anything. All your doing is helping those knock off sites of Forum Promotion grow in content and users. People see it as free advertising, great! Take advantage of it! But its the same people.

More links linking to your site and the potential of someone signing up who's not a member of Forum Promotion seeing your promotion are good, so its not exactly pointless to advertise on other sites that offer it. But when you specifically say "same crowd" as sites we're already promoting on, then it kind of is pointless.

Forum Promotion is already a large site with over 1 million posts, so everyone's priority would be to post here and then if they got time to post on other sites.

It can't hurt to promote everywhere, sometimes its just a waste of time.
