How likely are you to go outside, and pick pop cans, scrap metal, newspapers, and sell your stuff to exchange for money from a recyclers, or person who pay back money for pop cans, scrap metal, and old stuff?
If I'm unemployed, or not earning any money from my websites because it has low ad earnings/donations, I probably sell some or most of my stuff I rarely use on eBay, Craigslists, and similar sites before I go out to pick cans, and scrap metal to sell to the local recyclers.
I think earning money offline via selling your stuff and collecting cans and scraps to pay for a website is better then using a free hosted forum with their subdomain since you don't own the name, or the web space. In some cases, you also do not have control of your own forum software, or the content is owned by the free host.
Plus, it looks more professional then using other people's name like co.cc domains, or freeforums.org, so you have a better chance of finding a forum co-owner, or a person with funds to help pay for hosting, design, and other additional costs.
If Google, Facebook, Yahoo, myspace used a subdomain, and free webhost when they got started in the early days, I bet they would not be in the top 10 of most visited sites in the world.
