Unless its for post exchange, I would say no. Maybe Zetaboards is fine but Proboards or Forumotion is NOT OKAY!

99% of forums on those crappy free hosts are just made for the lulz. Almost all of them will be gone within a month or two anyway, so it'd be a waste.

I only join forums that are on host with cPanel, DirectAdmin or alternative. Forums which are made with ForumMotion, ZetaBoards, InvisonFree, ProBoards, are not good, or managed. Also, they must have a TLD domain for me to join.

Hell no! I hate joining them unless i have to. I get bombared with useless emails such as people replying to a topic or a email saying ive been inactive etc. I dont get this with other forums.

I sometimes I do join forumotion forum is they are doing really well. But as said before, most of them die in few months so I don't waist too much time on them. I mainly hang around phbb, vbulletin, and myBB forums.

Regardless, there are still a few genuinely good Forumotion and Proboards forums. I think a new Forumotion/Proboards forum would hinder my registration, but if it's been there for a while, has over 250k posts, then to some extent, I would join it if it can provide me with what I need.

I'm on several successful proboards. One that has 1.2 million posts.

If I see a new forum that looks like it might have some potential to it, no matter what host it's on, then I'll consider joining. For me, a forum has never really been about what host it's on (although I confess that I HATE Forumotion with a passion, having had a really crappy experience with them back in 2008) for me a forum has never been about what host it's on, good or bad, a forum for me has always been about the content and the community. Besides that, all forums start off somewhere. Sure, there are SOME people who have just gone right to advanced hosting from day one, but I'm sure a lot of the rest of us have started on free hosts sometime in our foruming phases, haven't we? Look at Forum Promotion! They've started out on freeforums and look where they are now? Bottom line is all forums start off somewhere. Just give some of the ones that look like they have potential a chance and see how far they go in a year's or so's time.

Same as Ashley. If I like the forum, then I will join, regardless of the software.

I agree.

If the content is good, then yes. I don't particular like either software, but I can overlook it if the community is good as a whole.

I actually like the look and feel of Zetaboards because I used it for a while. I also like Jcink and Invisionfree, even though it is old IPB, simply because I've been a member of a couple of those forums and am used to it.

The whole software debate is stupid, IMO. It's about community. Self-hosted is good for security and customisability, but as a member you don't really get a big say (if any) on that stuff, so why does it even matter?

But as said before, most of them die in few months so I don't waist too much time on them.
I'm pretty sick of this claim. Most forums on ANY software die within a few months. =_=

Then uncheck the box upon registration. :/ (Though most forums do/should it off by default).

I guess you never saw Brawl Domain or Warriors RPG before they switched hosts.

I agree; to be honest, the only time I don't join a forum due to software or host is when it has a generally bad forum on it. For example, if you have twelve CAPTCHA things and all are absurdly difficult, aswell as a dead, inactive forum, I will not want to join it.

Also why do people think host and software violate some sacred law, and good admins can't use them, around here? Really, Dashing is great and it was even while on ZB, and it's just one example of a great forum that was on a free host. There are people who just can't afford the hosting, so they settle for the ads of a free host.

If the layout is good, and the pages load at a decent rate, I have no issue with joining a free hosted forum.

I disagree with the OP though, I find zetaboards to be the worst software of all of the free hosts.

I still don't know what's so bad about ZB to some people. Lol.

I think it starts with the giant banner/login box at the top of the forum. It's just very intrusive and makes me click away pretty quick. But everyone is different 😀

Well, if the content is good, and the activity is good, and all that, then I have no objection with insisting that they get a half decent host instead of using some crappy free adsense-stuffed host.

Proboards isn't a bad Host. Just because they don't allow you to take the software for you to host it yourself means that they would rather carry the cost of hosting it themselves. It may be basic, but currently they are releasing some features that should make life more easy.

Of all the features Proboards has to offer, is the ability to add coding directly to your board, so that you can customize it. That is why they state it is customizable.

So why complain about it? If you don't like it, then don't use it. BUT if you have never used it before, then why complain about it, and discourage people from using it?

Not everyone has the money to afford getting a host to host forums themselves, and to get a domain.
