Microsoft has announced that more than three million Xbox One consoles were sold worldwide before the end of 2013.

In a post on Xbox Wire, Yusef Mehdi -- Xbox corporate vice president of marketing, strategy, and business – said the figure includes sales in 13 countries. “It’s been incredible to see Xbox One selling at a record-setting pace for Xbox, and we were honored to see Xbox One become the fastest-selling console in the U.S. during our launch month in November,” Mehdi wrote. “Since our launch, demand for Xbox One has been strong, selling out throughout the holidays at most retailers worldwide. We are continuing to work hard to deliver additional consoles to retailers as fast as possible.”

“The reaction from our fans was mind-blowing for our team,” he continued. “As we see your excitement, your energy and your hours of gameplay, we continue to be inspired to do great work – for you.”

Previously, Microsoft announced that Xbox One sales passed 2 million in 18 days, half of which came in the first 24 hours. By comparison, we last heard that 2.1 million PlayStation 4 consoles had been sold as of early December, though Sony hasn’t announced sales numbers since the end of the year.

Mehdi added that he expects 2014 to be a “promising year,” pointing to upcoming releases including Titanfall, Sunset Overdrive, Project Spark, and many more. “Thank you for making 2013 truly epic for Xbox and here’s to 2014,” he concluded.

I go to VGcharts to check up on the game sales

It says:
Xbox One - 2.9 Mil
PS4 - 4.1 Mil

You said they hit 3 Mil so it sounds pretty close. I hope Xbox One can get them selves back to the top. I like good competition in consoles.

I'm just going by what IGN posted. Also, PlayStation responded yesterday to the Microsofts news of surpassing 3 million with this tweet on twitter:

@PlayStation: 4.2 million PS4s sold. Four. Point. Two. Million. #CES2014* http://t.co/TXLA3FElQh

lol at Sony on that tweet.

The PS4 is clearly the better gaming console, and it costs less. It's better relative to the Xbox than the PS3 was to the 360, and the PS3 eventually outsold the 360. I'd be really surprised if the Xbox One ever gets a lead in worldwide sales, as PlayStation dominates in Europe and Asia.

The Xbox One may not get the lead in console sales, but it could be a successful niche game console for watching original streaming content from Xbox live, TV apps, streaming music, and exclusive game titles like Halo, Gears of Wars, and Forza sort of like the Wii U which have its millions of Pokemon, Mario, Zelda and Kirby fans.
