Displaying the numbers would only encourage the members with higher counts from posting as much and discourage those with lower counts from trying to catch up.

But it would encourage those with lower counts to try to catch up. I think a leaderboard offers transparency into the contest and that is generally a good thing.

I also think that a leaderboard should be public as it would promote competition (which is the entire point).

People won't be interested if they can't see if there effort is paying off or not.

Besides, if you're only going to take into account proper, thought out replies then those that post spam to try and inflate their post count won't achieve the goals anyway. I don't see a valid reason to hide the counts.
 
I'm curious as to why posts in the forum hot seat don't count. I get forum games, but the Q&A doesn't always have 'low value posts'.
