Hm dunno. I might would put it towards a custom skin. Though if I got off my lazy butt I could probably do that myself. Anyways! So I'd probably use it to buy a new domain or renew my other domain if I could convince my co-founders to change domains with me. And if all else failed I'd put it towards hosting.

Custom skins are about 25-30 dollars. And that's a pre-made one. If you were to commission someone to make a totally custom one just for your site, you're talking a few hundred dollars.

I usually had plenty of money when I ran my forum, but if I suddenly came into 10 dollars which I could only spend on my forum, I'd probably buy a posting service as someone said. That would get you like 25 well written posts.

$25-30 is really cheap for a custom theme. When you get to IPB or vBulletin, they easily run up to $300-500.

Occasionally, you might find a premium premade theme for $10.

I used IPB for my forum and I was an admin on a VB forum.. we got all premium premade skins for about 25-30 bucks.

Like you said though the custom from scratch ones are well into the hundreds.
