25 Reasons People Leave Your Site In 10 Seconds

14 is not necessarily a bad thing, but can limit some user's experience. For 22, Facebook's About page doesn't really give much information yet people use it (and new people sign up).

Man I hate #1 & #2 the most. I leave those sites immediately.

I hate the second reason with a passion. I hate popups. They are so annoying. Auto music is pretty bad too.

Blast from the past

I don't know, so many popular sites I have been on have pop ups so I am used to them, doesn't bother me anymore. So many are true though.

Agreed, many of the above are highly annoying...I'm trying to keep mine clean and without popups. It is "left aligned" though...oops 😉

i sometimes use pop ups to make my users click like us on facebook 😀 but i disable it sometimes.

#4 is kind of stupid. Yes depending on the content 10 might seem like a small number, but lets say you have thousands of uploads, should I really let the user sit there to load all 4,000+ uploads on my website for a single page? nah.

@DavidL regarding #14 it is kind of a bad thing. You are losing space to place content - my new rule of thumb for site widths is ~960px now as the typical screen resolution is ~1024x728 and this is honestly changing to bigger sizes and will be changed in the next few years even.

Also ill comment on #22 too - Facebook is not a website you should compare, or at least the non-logged in portion of the website. Facebook has some of the most users and is the #2 most visited website outside of Google. With this said, people already know what it is and honestly don't care what most of the company content says - they go to it to login / register to then do the logged in portion of the website.

I made a few slight edits thanks to this list. Thank you 🙂

I went into the article thinking I'd know all of 'em, but there were a couple that I didn't really think about before. And I agree.

Oh and the one I hate the most is interstitial - but a lot of big websites can get away with doing it, sadly.

Great article, it applies to forums as well as websites in my eyes.
I agree with you it's a great article. I'll Tweet this to my Twitter followers I'm sure they will be interested to read this.

Thanks for Sharing

I believe we have hopefully avoided all those pitfalls! Ironically, the link itself had some rather annoying pop-ups. Practice what you preach.

One more point to be added...
Point #26

As a universal fact users don't like sites which are inactive... and yes it is very hard to make your site active, it takes years

Very informative and entertaining article. Really enjoyed it. Many thanks for posting it.

Great list. Many do not take the time to know why people leave a site so fast. It is imperative to know these things so you can only better your site.
