Unfortunately I know someone who is about 50, and had a miscarriage at 47 ...something like that.

That can also happen ;( But what is an age when it's really too late? I say depends on that person's health..!

The older a woman gets, the higher the chance of birth defects happening (over 35 I've heard).

and I am not sure I am ready to be married...

It's not for everyone. If you don't want to get married, don't worry about it. Just keep being you and live your life. You can be in a healthy relationship without it.
