Read today that mobile malware has grown at a quite frankly incredible rate of 614% since last year. As an iOS user, I'm quite happy that 92% of that goes to Android but of course, no system is safe.

More worrying figures shows that only 4% of users of Android have the latest updates which is why so malware has spread so much. I encourage you all to update before you get infected!

What do you guys and girls think that Google can do to stem the huge amount of malware attacks? I think a better update system myself.

Most android phones come with a customized version of android from retailers, so for example, I have to wait until virgin mobile decides to release an update for me get the latest version. 4% of Android users have the latest version, because the company they go with are still updating the phone (or it was bought from Google).

Android is super fragmented, and probably always will be. Still, I've rooted my phone and keep my custom rom updated to try and avoid this.

Just be smart about what you can download. Any mobile device is at risk. Nothing is uncrackable 😛

Malware has risen on mobile devices, but I think the infection rates have not gone up much since I don't hear many wide spread stories of people getting infected on their phones compared to Windows desktops, and laptops.

Plus, most people probably don't download Apps which are not well known since a lot of non-popular apps are so hard to find if they are not in the top 100 since mostly popular apps are on the top of search results in Apps stores. I think most apps in the top 100 most downloaded are pretty safe.

Not suprising to see at all. The mobile market is booming with tablets and smartphones.

Windows 8 is a desktop and mobile OS which still supports desktop .exe programs, so if you also include Windows 8, there are a lot of viruses for mobile since Windows 8 is backwards compatible with many older Windows programs which may contain malware.

Although, Windows RT should be pretty safe since you can only download apps and programs from the Windows RT/8 App store, and can't install .exe software made for regular Windows 8.

Only 33% runs latest version of android and 92% runs latest version of ios, that's where the difference is.
Everything is vulnerable in some way but I imagine a lot of people who don't even know how to update their phone are infected. Usually these are not jailbreakers on apple so they install "safe" software.

But hey that's just my opinion 🙂

You can download anything on the App Store and it is safe.
I certainly hope you are not being serious with that comment. I know you are an Apple fan and like to show Apple in a good light but making claims like this actually makes you look a bit silly to say the least.

Nothing online is safe. If you genuinely believe that Apple has a sophisticated system in place that stops 100% of malicious apps and that people haven't been able to get around it then you really need to think hard about your online safety if you put that much trust into a company and believe that you are 100% safe downloading or installing anything. Comments like yours can also put other users at risk if they believe your comments that everything is safe.

I am a fan of Apple devices but also have Android devices too. Both have advantages and disadvantages over each other and I personally feel in terms of security that Apple does have an upper hand however I would certainly fall far short of saying everything from the App store is "safe".

Couldn't agree more.
