Many games require a lot of ram, sometimes as much as 16GB but generally CPU improves gaming more than RAM. So do you feel 16GB is enough RAM for even the most hardcore gamers or do you feel that even more RAM is necessary?

Yes, 16GB is good amount of Ram to us 🙂
Both of my gaming Computers have 16GB and the truth to be told that when gaming and recording it does use all of the ram resources at all. But when recording it uses CPU anyway. There are gamer out there that put 32GB or 128GB and what's the point spending extra amount if it's not going to be used.
HDD uses ram but has for the new SSD that you can buy it doesn't hardly uses ram 🙂
Rather spend on a very good GPU or CPU 🙂

For most people 16GB is probably enough. I mean I suppose 32GB would be useful if you were running a demanding game, video capture system, voice chat system and a few dozen tabs in chrome or something... but most people won't be doing that. Instead, if you've got the money, it'd be better off to have a more powerful GPU. I mean intensive games are going to hit the GPU harder than the CPU by a long shot. Plus some non-gaming programs (like video editors or graphic editors) make use of the GPU for their heavy processing because the GPU is more suited for it. Plus it future proofs you a bit since then you might not have to upgrade the GPU for a few years.
If you are gaming, then 16gb is fine. however, make sure you also have a decent Graphics Card as well!
However, if you are just using it for work and school, hell 4-8gb is enough.
If you are like me and like to do video editing from time to time, then 16gb is no where near enough.
Besides, my beast of a machine is for more than just gaming. I also render high resolution videos with after effects and premier pro. The more ram, the better! Otherwise, you may end up waiting days for just 30 seconds of video to be exported

my laptop can be upgraded with ram, and it has 16GB at the moment with one slot left and desktop can take higher

8GB is sufficient. But for games or video encoding you need 16GB.
Ram isn't the biggest factor in gaming. It helps but 8gb is enough for most games. Which is why a lot say minimum is 4-8gb Though 16gb is more than enough, they will usually list the suggested amount of ram at 16gb.
Video encoding requires a lot of ram, so the more the merrier.

I've found 8GB of RAM to be an issue with huge stuttering/freezing issues on certain games maxed at 1080p. Fallout 4 is one such example. It ran fine when I dialed some settings back though.
Since I upgraded to 16GB, haven't had an issue in any game at all, at least as far as RAM usage in concerned. For the "average" user, 8GB is actually plenty. But for gaming, knowing what I know now, I wouldn't go less than 16GB, if not just to have some headroom. I feel more than that, right now, is excessive.
