I had a brief idea today, and I thought I'd post about it and see what people thought.

The basic idea is that you would have a forum that people could invest in. All investors would be promised, say, 2x their invested amount within X amount of time. I think that it would actually work out well. It would attract visitors because it would be an easy way to earn money, and if you had a good reputation, you would easily be trusted. The traffic you would get could be converted into activity and ad revenue to pay back to your investors. Investors would be interested in something they invest in, and you would have the resources to do great things without paying out of pocket.

Anyway, just an idea I had. I wonder if something like this could work?

I like this idea. It could work but I believe that you need much money. No? 🙂

You would need an investment cap though, if you pay back x2 and everyone invests say £1000 would be hard to take off.

I can't see it really taking off. Forums don't really earn much and if I was to throw $1 million down I can't see you making $2 million in profit on a forum.

No- most forums don't earn much at all if you consider the amount of cash invested and time. There are exceptions of course but a good blogger is going to make more than someone running a good forum as a rule.

Most forums promoted around here might earn $10-50 a month, but unless you're massive, you're not going to be making $XX,XXX which would be worth investing in as you're going to get a decent return.

Your traffic would be minimal and even then your return rate for that traffic is almost 0. Say you get someone to invest and tell them they will get their return at this x amount of a date, why would they want to/be obliged to return untill the exact date they are supposed to get paid? Wouldn't make much sense because they aren't actually investing in anything persae, plus goodluck trying to find people who will trust you.

Not a shaby idea though buddy, no guts no glory.

Can I add that whilst it's a good idea in theory, it's barely practical.

Reasons:
1. People will only visit the forum to invest (which is highly unlikely in the first place) and then not visit again until they get their investment back.
2. As mentioned above, the profit margin on forums is not very big unless the forum is very big, and as such, if someone invests $100,000+ into the forum (again this is highly unlikely) then how do you plan on re-paying them the $200,000 you promised them? Adsense only goes so far and so does private ad sales, without a forum the size of Digital Point, or boards in the traffic range of DP (we're talking hundreds of thousands of visitors) this idea won't work.
3. Why would people invest in a forum, when there are far better things they can invest in?

Sorry to be so negative, but I just don't want you to jump into something that you might think is a gold mine, when really it's a dud.

Although I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm saying it won't be easy at all, and you should expect to first invest at least $10,000 into the forum yourself.

Brilliant idea, but requires best minds to find out some investment plans.

This can't be forum but an HYIP website..

It is better to run HYIP forum (high yield investment program forum).

You would get good number of advertisers...

That sounds about right. Even one of the biggest webmaster forums that I was member of only reportedly earned around $400 a month. And, it had tens of thousands of posts as a result of three different forums being merged. But the operating expenses were sky high.

Once you figure in hosting costs, editors or writers, paid banner ads and other operating expenses a forum owner might net nothing. :/

It would not work in my opinion. Your not going to get many returning clients at all which means ad payouts would suck. Also investors would not invest in a forum built to allow people to invest in my opinion.
