So I've been looking around and toying with the idea of getting a VPS. However I have no idea which provider to use. I've asked for input from a few people already and I've been recommended a few providers. But before I go ahead and choose one, I figured I would ask here...

What are some good VPS providers for a reasonable cost?

To help clarify things, I am considering an maximum cost (without any promotional changes) of 25 USD a month. (So if your suggestion would start more than that... please don't waste my time, I won't be considering it.) I would prefer a managed solution given that I'm relatively new to this and don't really want to add a lot of stress right now if I can avoid it. But if unmanaged is the only option then I'll take it.

Hardware wise, I'd like at least 20GB of storage space. If it's SSD that's great, if not I don't really care. Beyond that I don't really care.

25 USD a month can bring you many things apart from a 20GB disk drive or an SSD. It can give you 512MB RAM and a lot of bandwidth. Are you planning for a cPanel/WHM too?

A good way to check out good providers is do some research in various web hosting forums. You can check out the market place and then check out some reviews about them. Forums like WHT are more dedicated to hosting servers and their reviews. So you might want to check them out there too for a good review.

When I was looking though I wasn't planning on cPanel/WHM simply because those can cost 8-16 a month. (Which would put me over budget.) I was looking mostly for reliability.
I was looking for more than 1GB of ram, just because it allowed for more flexibility. Bandwidth I wasn't too concerned with since a lot of them have either massive amounts (like 1TB) to begin with or have really cheap addon amounts. (Plus it's unlikely that I'm going to hit 1TB in a month, at least for now...)

I've looked around at various places and have heard some conflicting stories. One person recommended KnownSRV and when I saw the reviews for them, they were almost universally negative. And when I checked Sitegeek to see what their rating wasn't exactly great. So I decided to pass on them. (Especially since they only had one package within my price range to boot.)

But I've picked a decent VPS now... (I went with Ramnode.) And things seem to be going very well. (My site is loading quicker now than it ever has and I feel like I have so much more freedom.)

Ramnode is a great unmanaged VPS provider. They come highly recommended by a lot of people. I would have recommended tmzVPS.com if you needed a managed solution with cPanel. $25 for managed doesn't really work because most providers use cPanel to save on management time.

$7 VPS + $10-$15 cPanel + $10- $15 a month management is about the pricing I'd be expecting for something like this.

We have a managed DirectAdmin client (it's not really a product we offer) but they pay >$25 /mo.

I would recommend Scala Hosting. They have very good technical support and high reliability. Their managed VPS are slightly above your budget but you can try their SSD cloud servers which is in your budget range because you can have custom configuration. It is also managed and their default configurations are only $19.95.

Still looking? If so, I recommend VPS hosting from 4Goodhosting. The pricing is reasonable in my opinion. Not just the pricing is sweet but the service is exceptional based on my long time experience. The server uptime is excellent and the reliability is outstanding. The most impressive part about these guys is the 24 hours support service. My support emails and tickets has been responded in just few minutes and not hours. Just imagine having a host like this. Go ahead and check them out.

For $25 you can get 2 GB RAM, 2 Virtual Intel CPU Cores @2.0 GHZ, 2 GB guaranteed memory, 80 GB solid state drive disk space, 1 Gbps network speed, Windows 7, 2003, 2008 & 2012, remote desktop access, 1 Gbps network / unmetered Transfer.

InMotion-the best overall VPS hosting service provider.
A2 Hosting-Excellent value for money.
Bluehost-the best feature.
iPage-Best for customer service.
HostGator-the best reliability.

Considering the generous storage, RAM and transfer limits, A2 Hosting is one of the best VPS hosting services you could choose. A2 Hosting beats the competition because of its ideal balance of pricing and features, including a 99.9% uptime guarantee, 24/7 support and a money-back guarantee.

HostHawk is another good one to look at

Namecheap is good. There available in most places around the world and if you reach out to their support the chances are they’ll give you an additional 10-20% of the package. Always buy a yearly package if your plan is long term as you’ll save a huge amount of money
