my web address is a great one, and my topic is undeniably a controversial and popular one (December 21, 2012). Can someone help a noob get started the right way? It's my first forum 🙂

Posting the address is a great start, try putting it in your signature on this forum?

Make sure you have lots of decent topics because if it's an empty forum no one will join no matter what the site genre is.

Agreed. If you don't have topics, no one will know what's appropriate to discuss and what isn't approriate.

I think the whole 2012 thing has been discussed to death. It was its popularity in 2009. Thats when you should have made the forum. 😛

I hope you're wrong... I had that initial fear, but I think as the actual date grows closer, the popularity will rise again

I bought the domains to sell 'em, so as long as I can make any sort of profit, I'll be happy :great:

I think theezy actually had a point, to be totally honest with you. I mean, if you were to have come on even this forum in 2009, you would have seen loads of topics about 2012 being made not only in the Intellectual Talk section, but you would've also seen loads of topics being made in the debate forum as well. Mostly they were topics along the lines of, "Do you really think this will happen?" or "what do you think will happen when this occurs?" The reason why you don't see topics about this these days, is that a lot of us are actually getting tired about this conspiracy. This sort of talk has been going on for years, and not one prediction has come true yet. Really, this sort of topic has gotten really old really fast for many of us, and I don't see another such topic like this being made until the next big rumor about the world ending in a given year.

2012 is a very difficult topic to have a forum about. Because lots of people have already discussed their thoughts on the matter and no longer wish for it to be discussed.

One thing I want to know is why you're using bbPress. So much more can be done with software such as phpBB, MyBB, SMF etc.

A suggestion I have is that you could have an area that discusses the 2012 movie. And add some more forums. Right now there is only one forum and other 2012 forums offer more.

+1

Was my exact thoughts after reading the first post. Still has potential, but you missed a golden opportunity when the whole topic became a global sensation years ago. Now, everyone's discussed every avenue of this, and I don't really think anyone cares all that much anymore.

Well, I'm not so sure if people are simply just tired of talking about the subject. That subject went on for a good two or three years on a lot of forums. I remember a topic here on FP on the subject that was at least five pages long, perhaps more. It's just that there's really nothing more to say about the concept. Sure, you could check the news and scrounge around the Internet for articles, rumors, news reports, whatever all you want. But it's just not a subject of interest for most people anymore.

After surviving the first rapture, I think people are tired of the whole end of the world doom thing. We'll have to wait for October 21. Though if it is October 21, I'm gonna be pissed cuz I won't get to see Agnostic Front the next week or party it up Rebecca Black style (it is a Friday, after all).

October? Don't you mean December? Because from my understanding this was all supposed to happen two days before Christmas Eve. But I agree otherwise, though.

October 21, 2011 is the supposed "new" rapture date. The guy mixed up his biblical passages or had too much to drink earlier this year when he said it was in May.

In order for you to have visitors, invite your close friends to join. Its easy that way, not many people here in this forum will never join you. People will only join ONCE your forum has many topics and posts - like 1000+... That's what people do. Unless you are willing to PAY, people will join. So i suggest start with your closest friends. Things that they are willing to share about 2012... or go look for mental people that talks about the end of the world... email some archeologists, sociologists, or NASA people.

And last thing, DON'T GIVE UP!! Even though you still don't have any visitors. Keep trying until you catch people's attention! 🙂 goodluck!

You need more sections if you want people to come more often than just when they want to talk about 2012.

Thanks everyone for your input. I will definitely take everyone's view on the topic into consideration, but I'm not ready to give up quite yet.

As far as bb3 is concerned, I accidentally started the original forum with them, and now host it through host gator.. the name servers have changed, but sometimes it still gets forwared to the other site 🙁

I am working on getting some friends together to post some new topics, and have been doing some research to figure out new topics to post myself.

Thanks again for all your replies!!!

1,000 posts is kind of pushing it. Usually the recommendation is about 2 or 3 posts for each section (or so I've been told when I first started out). So you really don't need THAT many posts. All I'd do is just post a few topics (again, about 2 or 3 for each section tops) so that members have some sort of guide to go by, as by having at least a couple posts in all sections will give some members a clue as to what's appropriate as far as discussions goes. In my book, especially when a forum is based on a specific niche, one should have posts in the specific areas, so that a person has some idea of what the forum's about.
