Believe it or not pepper spray ownership, carry and use is banned in the UK and highly illegal. Even worse it's banned under Section 5(1)(b) of the Firearms Act 1968 meaning the penalties if caught are huge, up to 7 years in prison I believe.

The only legal protection you can carry in the UK is a rape alarm.

I've taught my wife and daughter to hold onto their keys in a coat pocket especially if walking home late at night. It's ironic that keys are a far more effective and dangerous weapon than a pepper spray and yet they are entirely legal.

I don't understand why pepper spray is considered a threat over in the UK. A lot of people in the US carry it around.

It's weird because they're totally fine with people carrying knives and other stabbing weapons.

In the year ending March 2023, there were around 50,500 offences involving a sharp instrument in England and Wales (excluding Devon & Cornwall). This was 4.7% higher than in 2021/22 but 7% lower than in 2019/20.

With the pepper spray, if I can do it quickly, I can run and try to hide. Most of the trails I hike on, I know some really good hiding spots and I take some of the fire trails so I know my way around the parks better than most people.
