A Phone Recommendation for me please?

So currently in life till Black Friday, I will have about 1 k CAD$ to spend extra on a phone. I currently am using my mom's 5S iPhone, which phone is the best on the current market for one at that price?

I really like the Android platform and have found the Samsung line to be robust - but there is a learning curve between the two operating systems which is good to keep in mind. You may wish to stay with Apple. The iPhone 12 will be coming down in price soon as the 13 nears a release date.

An intriguing option is the Pinephone, which accepts a Linux based OS, but I wouldn't recommend it for a casual phone user. You really have to be a hobbyist.
