I have a fairly new forum and was wondering does adding links to other sites on my homepage change my position on a search engine ?

I am not sure i think they need to have your link on their site too for it to be working.

Are you talking like an affiliate exchange? You add my banner and I add yours, that kind of thing? If so, I think it could help. The best advice I can give, however, is that if you are doing an affiliate exchange with someone, it's better to do it with someone with a similar niche as yours, although I think you can pretty much do any niche, really. Someone with more experience help BOTH of us out please!?

If we're talking about Google, I know they like to change their algorithms every once in a while, so my knowledge on this could be outdated.

Anyways, it could potentially hurt your position on a search engine if you have a bunch of outbound links to "bad" and irrelevant sites. But it can also be good if you link to resourceful and related sites and are conservative about it.

You just have to play it smart and safe when it comes to linking to other sites. The same goes for when you want to have others link to your site.
