A new Fediverse alternative to TikTok is emerging with the introduction of Loops, a short-form looping video app developed by Daniel Supernault, the creator of Pixelfed. Loops opened sign-ups recently, offering users the ability to post videos up to 60 seconds long. While still in development, features like sound integration, video remixing, and pinned profile videos are in the pipeline. Users will also have control over their comment sections by curating interactions, though hashtags and mentions are not yet supported.
The rollout of Loops is gradual—those signing up will need to wait for confirmation emails before accessing the platform. Initially, the iOS version will launch through Apple’s TestFlight, and an Android app will be made available for sideloading. The app will employ human moderators and assign trust scores to users, which will influence how quickly their videos get approved and posted.
While Loops aims to be integrated into the Fediverse, the feature isn’t live yet, and the app has not been open-sourced. According to the FAQ, the platform won’t sell user content or provide data for AI training. Instead, it will rely on grants, sponsorships, and donations for funding.
