I'm seriously considering making the jump to vB forums, I just have no clue what I'm getting into since I've never seen the admin panel, or have any clue on how to customize one. I've done the demo vB thing, but it's very limited.

Is there any videos, or blogs , or anything, that shows how one works when customizing/adding features. Is it all done through an admin panel, or is there php editing involved through the cPanel's file manager?

Vbulletin is very easy to work with, I have dealt with it for a long time. Although I just renew my IPB license now. (I think ipb is better). But it's fairly easy. Just search google for anything you wish to do with vb and you can find out how to do it. Such as "installing theme for vb" would work. 😉 Best of luck!

I just don't think i'm landing on the right sites for both.

can you link me to both ipb & vB support forums. so i can check through each and see which has the features i'm looking for. are their mods/features/addons listed on support sites?

I'm just tired of smf MOD developers showing of these new features they're working on, then abandon them after waiting so long for any updates on them.

Hi.

If I correctly understand your question, the vBulletin Manual may be worth a look ( http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/ ). The section titled "Plugin System" details the installation of add-on features (called "products" or "plug-ins," the latter being a much simpler add-on akin to what phpBB users may call a "snippet").

The installation of add-on features is mostly automated, in that most of the time all you need do is upload a file directly from the AdminCP and maybe some files and folders through your FTP or File Manager.

If you want to see what add-ons are available for vBulletin, it is best to click on the "Mods" tab near the top-right of vBulletin.org.

I used the Demo a long time ago and agree its pretty limited. I've had a license and its pretty easy to navigate around. The main things I used was Forums and Plugins. The UI is a bit different from other softwares though. If I still had vB I'd make a tutorial for you for sure.

If you are gonna move to a paid software, I really think IPB would be better suited for you.

I've checked them out, and liked other forums i seen on IPB, but the order page is too confusing with all the Add-Ons you have to pay for.

About vB, are all the MODs listed on the site free once you purchase the license? Also, is vB 4.o Forum License what i need to buy?

This is what's really pulling me towards vB, and just want to make sure that'll be available for free as an add-on http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=238945 (someone at smf told me they could make one for my site, but cost me around $200 )

Those add-ons at vBulletin.org (including the one you linked to) are free for use so long as you have a valid vBulletin license.

At vBulletin.com, the vBulletin 4.0 Forum License ($195) is what you would buy if you just want the forum software. If you want the forum software bundled with the blog and CMS "modules" (along with ticket support), you would buy the vBulletin 4.0 Publishing Suite ($285).

IPB has tons of free plugins aswell. The order page if I am thinking correctly is showing you other big plugins made by the makers of IPB.

For free themes and plugins invisionize is a great place to go to. invisionmodding is another good place aswell.
