Do you allow anyone on your forum to message you and request their account be deleted? Do you have a setting on your forum that allows someone to delete their own account?

Depends on the reason behind it I guess. I wouldn't be opposed to it as long as there was a good reason.

Nope I do not, we even have a rule on it. I will change their username and email if they would like.

I have not yet ran into a need for deleting anyone (other then some obvious spammers at one point).

I have considered installing an extension that lets users delete themselves though, and would surely consider deleting a user if they asked me to do it.

Handling the posts from deleted users is another question though. I'd not be inclined to delete them at all, probably they'd be left as posted by anonymous or something like that, removing the posts would disrupt the threads too much in my opinion.

No. It screws up with both the database and flow of discussions. Only butthurt manchildren ask for such things.

I don't like the thought of deleting accounts at all. I like LadyAnna's suggestion of maybe allowing them to change their name to Anonymous or something like that as to prevent any gaps in the discussion threads. Other than for copyright reasons when it comes to creative writing I don't see why one would want the messages/account deleted.

Deleted accounts tend to make a forum look messy. 😛 If someone wants to deactivate their account that's fine, but accounts make someone's posts searchable, and let you more easily identify them with an avatar, etc.

If you want to protect yourself from being legally required to delete an account, though (which will almost never happen, but it could theoretically happen) you need to add something like this to your forum's rules and preferably the terms of service. Feel free to use this specific language if you want to.
