I finally did it. My forum p8i.com is number 10 on the first page of the term "Video Game Forums" in Google. Since it's at the bottom, it may go back and forth between the first and second page, but I'm happy to see it make it to the first page nevertheless. My forum is not even a year old and we're outranking a lot of established web pages and forums.

Congrats!!

It's very hard to get a board to such a high score on the google , especially a one as common as video games.. excellent job!

Good job on the high search rank. It was wise to add that text in with your forum title. Alot of video game forums make some strange names, and thats why they hardly get a good search rank.

Adding those key words will make all the difference.

Yeah, I've noticed that too. I think a lot of people focus too much on their meta keywords. I'm no expert, but from my experience, meta keywords have little to no effect. Forum title and domain pretty much outweigh everything except content.

What SEO methods did you use to get your site to that rank? Did you do a lot of link building?

- Made sure my forum title contained my key words and phrases. That's a must. Wouldn't hurt to also add them in the description, too. I did.
- Submitted my forum to a bunch of directories using that phrase.
- Added a hyperlink to my forum in my sig (using my keyphrase) at every forum I visit.
- The other admin has been consistently writing high-quality articles, so lots of sites were linking to us.
- Looked at what my competitors were doing and tried to do it better.
- Added alt and title tags to my logo and included my keyphrase.
- Advertised. Not only the forum itself, but some of the content I have in it.

That's about it.

Thank you for all that!!! +rep to you and your post is going in my bookmarks 😉

You're very welcome.

Oh and another thing: A lot of people will disagree with me, but I think it's beneficial to have keywords in your URL rather than random characters. I believe they call those "clean urls". Now, that probably won't help your homepage's ranking, but I bet you'll start to see your other categories (ex: off topic) climb up the ranks.

Yup 😉

Fantastic job so far dude, you have certainly got a hold on that keyword. How much traffic are you receiving from it so far? It's nice to see a forum using static URL's throughout 🙂
