Actors playing different roles

When you watch a show with a main character is it hard to see them in another role? Example, I’ve watched SG1 a couple of times now. Amanda Tapping is Samantha Carter. However, I first watched the actress in Sanctuary with longer black hair & an accent. It took me awhile to acclimate seeing her in SG1.
Another example is David Tennant in Doctor Who. I saw him in Broadchurch & could see similar nuances but it was hard not picturing him as “The Doctor”.

Absolutely, it's very hard to shake a good character actor. Watching Daniel Radcliffe in My Boy Jack, for instance. Good film, but Harry Potter leading the Irish Guards was odd 😀. Ian McKellen in Mr. Holmes, he was absolutely astounding in that role, but he was still Gandalf to me, same when played Magneto, it was hard to see Gandalf as a bad guy 😀. Elijah Wood in Green Street Hooligans, same thing, seeing him as an American learning about football hooliganism and becoming one himself...it was odd seeing Frodo with a firm 😀. Emily Deschanel in Glory Road after watching Bones, it was so odd not seeing her as Bones!

Same for a few other actors in a few other roles, once you know them it's hard to see them differently.

I would prefer them to be a similar character to keep with their practice and perfect it more. However, if they want to try something different or change an actor for a fictional character but in the same series, it keeps things interesting. I was thinking of how voice actors can play different roles for the same form of media and that works. So I don't see issues when it's a complete character change but I think the roles are always reviewed for their preferred position in the acting.

Not really. Arnold Schwarzenegger did it all of the time in the Terminator films.

I really do admire actors who are able to play a convincing character that bears no resemblance to any of their previous work. Here's a good example of a film I saw recently. I had to Google the main character and I was amazed to find out who was playing the part. Can you guess who (without Google)?

I cannot guess who she is. Nor the movie.

Nicole Kidman 😉

Well, with Robin Williams, oddly enough, he was better as a dramatic actor than a comedy one. His comedy was too goofy or something, lol. Well, you can't beat Awakenings and Dead Poet's Society.

Robin Williams was always good a those kind of things
