Do you think it matters to guests who are thinking about signing up to a forum that they see that the Administrator is the main poster on a forum? Is it a good thing or a turn off?

Not really. I mean, who else is gonna be the main poster on a brand new website? If you don't already have an audience from a prior forum you ran, then you're going to have to be the one posting all the initial content anyway.

So no, it doesn't really matter. It's never stopped me joining or posting on a forum, and it's probably never really affected any forums I ever ran either.

Having the root admin be number 1 poster is actually a good thing. That (generally*) shows that admin is dedicated to their forum and wants to see it succeed.

*Barring cases where people start a new forum then make like 12 posts (which makes them the top poster) and then expect others to do the rest. They may well be top poster, but that doesn't mean anything if they aren't continually adding new topics. Since they're only going to remain the top poster because no one is going to want to join and start posting. (If the admin won't post, why should anyone else?)

The admin being the top poster isn't a bad thing, actually as said before it can be a good thing because it shows that the admin is dedicated. 🙂

I say having the main admin and ALL staff posting lot's help keep members happy and active as they see a staff that is active and dedicated to the forum they will want to stay.

I think it can be beneficial to know that the admin is the top poster. It shows dedication that the admin is invested to the forum and wanting to keep it going.

If the owner/admin isn't passionately involve in his or her own forum, then why should a member be? When I see that an admin or forum owner has the most posts on a forum, it just tells me they love the forum and usually I know I will too.

I don't particularly believe it's a bad thing for an administrator to have the highest post count. I usually am on my forums. It just shows they're active and dedicated. I mean if there is really active members that overtake the administrators that's a good thing I guess.

It is a good thing that admin posts frequently. But if the forum is old and most of the threads and posts are done by admin, it is a turn off.

I think it is a good thing to have the admin as the number 1 poster of the forum (especially if it is new) since the users will be able to realize that the admin is dedicated and would answer their inquiries if they have some.

I don't think it does any harm on a new forum, but if it's been around a while and the admin is the only poster then I'd be worried!

I have a bit of difficultly on my forum in a way, it being a political one, because I wanted to keep the admin account as 'neutral', rather than being involved in the cut-and-thrust of political debate (which inevitably tends to breed accusations of 'political bias' even when there aren't any). After an initial start up period of posting some threads to get things going, 'Admin' now only posts in things related to the forum itself (including welcoming new members, which I think is important). Obviously on a young forum there's lots of discussion about the forum and how things will run (something I want to be very open and discussive about - ultimately I believe that the forum belongs to the members, not the Admin), so 'Admin' is still quite active.

When it comes to discussing actual politics, though, I post using a separate member account, so that I'm not seen as being 'Admin' or 'the boss' or anything when I'm doing it, of you see what I mean. I'm just an ordinary member posting like any other member. There's nothing secret about hat at all - it's publicly announced and known that the two accounts are both me, but it allows me to keep that visible separation between 'posting member' just posting political opinions like anyone else, and the 'official stuff'. It also means that my member account is usually more active in terms of posts than 'Admin', although 'Admin' does remain active and is seen posting.

To be honest I agree that it can leave a positive impression to have a Number 1 poster administrator but ultimately, at least for me it matter most their content that the fact they are posting too much.

I am not too keen on admins that will reply absolutely every other reply even if with a few words, to the point it feels forced. It is like they are desperately seeking to be the first place no matter what. Sure, as an admin I understand that you need to reply to keep the ball rolling, but if you don't add anything useful and your posts may be considered 'spam/flood' then it can backfire. Please understand me, one thing is getting excited about your first new members and trying hard to make them welcome and another is posting 40 posts a day worth of "ok. 🙂""No problem","check this other thread", etc. Specially if the post above was well written or left a glaring question unaddressed.

The other kind of admins that post a lot and yet puts me off are the ones that just posts news summaries. I don't mind having news but if there are not other members as a visitor I want to find too some threads that allows me to know this fella a bit more and open up myself. It is especially frustrating when there are other conversations going on but admin never gets involved as is too focussed in that news section. Maybe if the news wasn't so robotic and sparked more discussions and the admin was okay to show some personality I'd feel with more ease.

I am ranting about this because I see it often, perhaps it is just me or perhaps other people actually feel similar. I just wanted to point this out.

It is true that the admin should be more active than any other members on a forum. It seems that the admin is really concerned about the forum and takes part in almost every conversation.

I believe it can have its up and downs... Admins should post a lot. They should be the oen to help keep the froum active. A dead admin is not good. However, if you visit a forum and its only the admin and his / her mods that are talking, I'm not to sure its a good thing. You always want to get member activity going.

I can only ever see this as a good thing. If the admin/owner is the main poster it means that you are active on your own site, you care about the site and want it to be successful. A lot of people tend to make forums and think that the members will just come rolling in and they never have to post, which always leaves the forum dead, and inactive. This will show opposite to new, and potential members.

If I don't post on my own forum, then how can I expect others to do the same? Furthermore, it is my forum, why on Earth wouldn't I post on it? Content doesn't create itself, and it doesn't respond to itself either.

As it was previously mentioned, a dedicated admin is a good thing.

However, having too many posts on your forum to the point where it is more than 50% or 75% of the posts there might be a deterrent to guests in the sense that it tells them that the forum is dead, and that the admin has resorted to replying to themselves in an effort to generate some activity.

If an admin is the most active user on the site, it shows your guests and users that your active on your own site. People love when a forum has active admins, so I don't see how it hurts anything. If anything, not having an admin as the top 10 active users would hurt your registrations more than anything if you showcase top users.

I try myself to be the main poster, I always love a challenge being the top poster on my forum same on a different forum.

Admin not being the main poster on there forum isn't a big thing, you can still show dedicated when just being online for so many hours a day.

I guess if it's being done to make money people might do this, but I started a discussion forum ultimately because I like discussing things. There were other reasons why I ended up going down that route rather than just joining another forum, of course, but when it boils down to it that's the starting point - why wouldn't I want to be posting?
