Do you restrict access in the Admin CP? Would you eventually give full access to another Admin?

When I was an admin, I had a password to get into the ACP.

If you know them well and trust them. All of our admins are 100℅ trustworthy. We've known each other for more than a decade.

When new people bought anime-forumsdotcom, our previous site, they let just anyone into the server (as well as putting us on cheap hosting - site had at least 260GB traffic lol). One day they let a power hungry sod in, despite my warnings to the owners. He removed me from super admin and deleted my account. My posts were still there so we did SQL to attach them to a new account. He also installed a bunch of hacks and redirected the forum.

That was why we made SC. We had enough of the new owners. They didn't care about us or the members. Be careful who you give power to.

Ouch, that must've been bad. Glad you got a new site though!

That last sentence is so true - you cannot trust everyone, so watch who you're giving admin to.

I have someone on my staff roster that is serving as a community manager and she has access to parts of the ACP that she needs to fulfill her duties.

I think it's a good way to divvy up responsibility without handing over full ACP access.

I gave full access to Cosmic once.

Silly, why would you do that?

I've always used ACP perms, I usually had a community manager or something of the sort, and they'd have access to the ACP to manage users and a few other things, but that's about it. It's a good way to earn the trust of someone, too.

My staff has very limited access to the admin panel, only really to do moderating duties. I prefer to be the only admin.

I would give anyone that works with me on Forum Coin full Admin CP, I completely trust them and I am one of those that trusts no one. Fergal and Cyberfreak, the owners of ForumCoin and former owners of ForumPromotion, have chosen the right people when they were hiring.

The other ForumCoin moderators I would trust: Sam, MeowsePad and Allius.

Seems like most of us are on board with restrictions within the Admin CP. 🙂

I think most web entrepreneurs will find that there are times when they can trust someone enough to give them 100% access. But, in reality, they don't *need* full access. If you get in a fight, they may sabotage you. Or, even more likely, they could be hacked... voila, the hacker has full access to your forum. By limiting the number of users with full access, you limit the chance of someone taking advantage of you.

Yeah, then he booted us out...

But for real: as the owner, I usually hire Administrators to take care of certain aspects of the community, therefore limit their Admin CP access. There have been a few times, such as Tune Junkies (and it's successor Music Junkies), where I have gone 50/50 with another person, allowing them to be Co-Owners, but that's the only time I share everything.

I normally have different tiers of admin responsibility within the team: for example Jr Admins would have some acsess and then I would assign an admin to various aspects of the site. For the most part though, I would only have 2 admins that way they can cover administration if I have to go away etc. Occssonally I'll allow the Community Team Leader to have acsess to the ACP to manage usergroups and manage the staff team as a whole but only rarley. Also the Development Team get acsess to extensions and customise tabs in the ACP.

Myself, my co-owner, and developer have full access to the ACP. Our Support Team which are like moderators are given access to what they need in the ACP only. Usually it's areas like members, bannings/warnings, logs, etc. Not that we don't trust them, it is just easier that way and prevents any future issues.

If it's a person i don't know well, i restrict their access until i can trust them.

If I trust someone to be admin, they will have full admin access since that is what I'm trusting them to do. The only time I'd restricted ACP usage is when someone is only editing forum skins or adding a piece of code or something, and not actually doing admin work.

If you care about forum security, then only the owner should be the administrator. Everyone else to be immediately locked out. If you don't quite understand how to handle most of the administrator tasks, then make use of that opportunity to learn the ropes. It's also a good idea to not depend on others for that.
